The New Jersey Devils have acquired right wing Tuomo Ruutu from the Carolina Hurricanes for Andrei Loktionov and a conditional third round pick in 2017.

Blue Jackets land Tuomo Ruutu.

Devils land Tuomo Ruutu.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Hurricanes have shopped Ruutu for some time. It was originally believed the Jackets were linked to him in recent rumors so this move is a surprise. Ruutu is a physical two-way winger with decent offensive skills but also has a lengthy injury history. He also has two more years at $4.75 million per season remaining on his contract, which makes this even more surprising. This also represents a significant salary dump for the Hurricanes.

The Devils were seeking scoring, but Ruutu might not be able to bring that for them. Lokitonov, meanwhile, gets another chance at a fresh start. He was acquired by the Devils from the LA Kings last season but didn’t play up to expectations as a playmaker.
