Canadiens edge the Maple Leafs, Flames burn the Oilers, Jets defeat the Predators, and the Canucks and Senators prepare for today’s Heritage Classic game in Vancouver.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: This was a game dominated by dullness enlivened by occasional bursts of excitement. Definitely not one of the more memorable games in the long rivalry between these two teams.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: If you’re a Flames fan, you’ve seen the future, and his name is Sean Monahan. This kid will be the Flames franchise player very soon. Only Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon has more rookie goals this season.
WINNIPEG SUN: Ondrej Pavelec made 39 saves carrying the Jets to a 3-1 win over the Nashville Predators.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Jets are ohsoclose to a playoff berth right now. They’re tied with Dallas and Vancouver in points (66) but remain outside the playoff picture as the Stars have two games in hand.
VANCOUVER PROVINCE: In a surprising move, the Canucks will start backup Eddie Lack over Roberto Luongo in today’s Heritage Classic game against the Senators.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I understand coach John Tortorella’s wish to go with the hot hand in goal, but this has created an unnecessary distraction leading up to the game. Even if the Canucks win, sitting Luongo for this game will overshadow it.
OTTAWA CITIZEN: Craig Anderson will start in goal for the Senators in today’s Heritage Classic, while defenseman Jared Cowen will be a healthy scratch.
