The San Jose Sharks have traded the rights to defenseman Dan Boyle to the New York Islanders in exchange for a conditional pick in 2015.

Dan Boyle's rights have been dealt to the Islanders, but will he re-sign with them?

Dan Boyle’s rights have been dealt to the Islanders, but will he sign with them?

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The pick is a fifth rounder in next year’s draft, which becomes a fourth rounder if Boyle signs with the Islanders. This isn’t the first time the Isles have acquired the rights to a pending UFA blueliner, as they did so with Christian Ehrhoff three years ago. As with Ehrhoff, it remains to be seen if Boyle will sign with the Isles, or test the UFA market in search of a better deal or destination. If it’s the latter, the Isles could try to trade Boyle’s rights before his eligibility for UFA status on July 1.

Earlier today it was reported the Tampa Bay Lightning, who Boyle spent several seasons with (winning a Stanley Cup in 2014), were interested in acquiring his rights. If so, Boyle might be more interested in joining them. Should be interesting to see what develops with this situation.
