SPECTOR’S NOTE: Anyone else out there besides me feeling old about now?

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: Rangers GM Glen Sather is trying to play hardball with some of his free agents as the salary cap comes in $2 million lower than projected. Hearing some of the prices being floated around during the free-agent interview period, Sather believes some of his free agents will have to consider “pulling in their horns a little bit” if they want to re-sign with the Rangers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Sather has only himself to blame for his cap space. If he had the cap room and was in position to pursue another club’s free agents, he would. As for the Rangers free agents, sure, they cognizant of how much cap space the team has, but they also want to get the best contract they can. It’s the business of hockey under a salary cap.

NJ.COM: Devils GM Lou Lamoriello complains the free-agent interview period has been a distraction this year, suggesting it’s the reason there wasn’t as many trades leading up to, and including, the draft weekend as anticipated.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s a good point, as much of the focus last week seemed to be more upon the draft selections and free agent interviews than in making trades. With the draft now over, and the start of the free-agency period fast approaching (July 1), trade activity could increase once most of the best free-agent talent is signed this week.

ESPN.COM: San Jose Sharks coach Todd McLellan mused about his club not having anyone as captain next season. Currently Joe Thornton is the Sharks’ captain and there’s speculation he could be stripped of the “C”.

NBC SPORTS: The Columbus Blue Jackets signed Dalton Prout to a two-year, one-way contract.

LOS ANGELES TIMES: The Kings yesterday traded Linden Vey to the Vancouver Canucks for a second-round pick.

ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER: The Anaheim Ducks will sport a different look to the jerseys next season.
