TORONTO SUN: Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan defended his club’s free-agent signings.

“There is a perception out there that was incorrect about us and July 1,” Shanahan said Wednesday, when he decided to address the media at Leaf prospect camp. “We were strategic, we had a plan. We targeted certain individuals and got almost all of them.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Leafs were among the bidders for Dan Boyle, tried to acquire Josh Gorges (he vetoed a trade to Toronto and was later dealt to Buffalo) and opted not to overpay to retain Dave Bolland. While the Leafs didn’t make a big splash in the free-agent market, they also didn’t waste dollars on ageing talent.
