Ryan Johansen no closer to a new contract with the Blue Jackets.

Ryan Johansen no closer to a new contract with the Blue Jackets.

NBC SPORTS: The Columbus Blue Jackets continue to negotiate with restricted free agent Ryan Johansen. It’s believed Johansen seeks a four-year deal while the Blue Jackets prefer a two-year contract.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Unless someone pitches Johansen an offer sheet, he’ll either have to stage a holdout (which will likely do more harm than good to his performance this season) or accept the Blue Jackets’ offer. He’s go no arbitration rights and thus no leverage.

TSN.CA/SPORTSNET.CA: Darren Dreger reports the New York Rangers are close to signing forward Lee Stempniak, while Brad May claims it’s a done deal.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Rangers continue to try and shore up the depth they lost via free agency this summer. Time will tell how well addition like Stempniak fit into their roster.

TRIBLIVE.COM: The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed defenseman Simon Despres to a two-year, $1.8 million contract. They have also hired Mark Recchi as a player development coach.

DETROIT FREE PRESS: The Red Wings are no closer to re-signing RFAs Danny DeKeyser and Tomas Tatar.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Like Johansen with the Blue Jackets, DeKeyser and Tatar are coming off entry-level contracts and lack arbitration rights. They’ll both likely have to sign short-term bridge contracts.

CSNNE.COM: The Boston Bruins re-signed Justin Florek.
