Updates on P.K. Subban, Derick Brassard, Jimmy Hayes and Danny DeKeyser, the Hurricanes new head coach and more.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban declined to discuss his contract negotiations during an appearance at the RBC Canadian Open, preferring instead to talk golf. Subban and the Canadiens are slated for arbitration on August 1.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: There’s a slim possibility Subban’s case could go before an arbiter, but I expect he’ll be re-signed to a lucrative long-term deal before August 1. I believe it’ll be for 8 years at an average annual salary between $7.5 – $8.5 million.

Brassard and Rangers still apart in contract talks as arbitration looms.

Brassard and Rangers still apart in contract talks as arbitration looms.

NBC SPORTS: It’s believed Derick Brassard and the New York Rangers are about $1.1 million apart in contract negotiations. Brassard and the Rangers are schedules for an arbitration hearing on July 28. “Brassard seeks $4.95 million while the Rangers request a $3.825 million”.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: They’re not that far apart so it’s possible they can reach an agreement on a new deal without going before an arbiter tomorrow.

SUN-SENTINEL.COM: Harvey Fialkov reports a source claiming the Florida Panthers and forward Jimmy Hayes were unable to reach an agreement on a new contract and are headed for arbitration this week in Toronto.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Hayes’ hearing is slated for Tuesday, July 29.

FOX 17 WEST MICHIGAN: Detroit Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser, a restricted free agent, expects he’ll have a new contract with the Wings before the start of training camp.
