Oilers still negotiating with Justin Schultz.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Oilers management expressed confidence in re-signing RFA defenseman Justin Schultz before training camp. While the two sides discussed a five-year deal it appears it could be a bridge deal similar to that received by Montreal’s P.K. Subban nearly two years ago worth close to $3.75 million annually.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If Schultz makes significant improvement this season it wouldn’t surprise me if the Oilers re-sign him to a long-term extension next summer.

LA PRESSE: Vancouver Canucks winger Alex Burrows hopes to put the nightmare of last season behind him. Injuries hampered Burrow’s performance, limiting him to only 15 points in 49 games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: While Burrows is approaching his mid-thirties (33) I believe he still has some productive years left. Last season was a case of bad luck (injuries) and playing for a team in turmoil. He should rebound this season.

CALGARY HERALD: Former Flames defenseman Cory Sarich recounts this summer’s life-threatening cycling accident in British Columbia.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: While Sarich is expected to make a full recovery this seriously hampers his hopes of signing on with another NHL club.

TVASPORTS: Agent Don Meehan, who represents defenseman Francis Bouillon, claims he’s still working on a new one-year contract for his client with the Canadiens.

TORONTO STAR: Kyle Dubas, the Maple Leafs new assistant GM, is busying himself learning the club’s inner workings.

WINNIPEG SUN: The Jets are preparing to return for what’s expected to be a tough training camp this year.
