The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired defenseman Jordan Leopold from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2015.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Blue Jackets have three defensemen currently sidelined in Fedor Tyutin, Ryan Murray and Cody Goloubef. Of these, losing Tyutin is the bigger blow. This acquisition suggests Tyutin could be sidelined for a lengthy period. The much-traveled Leopold should provide experienced depth to the banged-up Blue Jackets defense corps.
The Blues have considerable depth on defense and can afford to part with Leopold, who wasn’t seeing as much playing time in St. Louis as he now will in Columbus. The Blues have also reportedly retained $500K of Leopold’s $2.25 million salary, but this move will free up additional cap space for other moves if necessary later in the season.
