The Nashville Predators have dealt center Derek Roy to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for center Mark Arcobello.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: As per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Oilers traded for Roy, rather than pluck him off waivers, to avoid reaching 50 players under contract for this season. No salary was retained in the deal. Roy’s cap hit is $1 million while Arcobello’s is $600K.
It’s a move the Oilers evidently felt they had to do, as they lacked experienced depth at center. Trading away the hardworking though less skilled Arcobello probably won’t sit well with some Oilers fans. Roy is 31 and his best years are well behind him. I agree with those who consider this nothing more than a lateral move. It certainly won’t make the Oilers any better this season.
The Predators, meanwhile, shed some salary and pick up a younger, cheaper center for their fourth line.
