The Florida Panthers have traded left wing Tomas Fleischmann to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Dany Heatley and a 2015 third-round draft pick. The Carolina Hurricanes have traded defenseman Tim Gleason to the Washington Capitals for Jack Hillen and a 2015 fourth-round pick.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Interesting move by the Ducks, who were widely perceived in the market for a “hockey trade” involving a defenseman with term on his contract. Ducks GM Bob Murray said earlier this week he wasn’t seeking rental players, but decided to add depth to his forward lines with a rental like Fleischmann, who is a UFA at season’s end. Murray picks up the veteran winger for a reasonable price plus he moves out Heatley, who’s spent a good chunk of this season in the minors.
Bit of an unusual move by Panthers GM Dale Tallon, but perhaps he’s gambling that Heatley might have something left in the tank to help Florida down the stretch. At the very least, Tallon gets a draft pick for Fleischmann, whose production dropped significantly in recent years and had no future with the Panthers after this season.
The Capitals and Hurricanes swap pending UFA blueliners who weren’t going to be re-signed. The Hurricanes can evaluate Hillen over the remainder of this season to determine if he’s worth retaining and get a pick for Gleason, who has an opportunity to provide the Capitals with experienced depth and physical play for the upcoming playoffs.
