The Edmonton Oilers have stopped trying to woo Ottawa Senators winger Dany Heatley. Find out why and what their alternatives could be.
TSN.CA: reported yesterday Edmonton Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini announced he's no longer interested in trying to acquire disgruntled winger Dany Heatley from the Ottawa Senators.EDMONTON JOURNAL: Jim Matheson reports Tambellini saying the Heatley camp wanted to explore other options, which Matheson categorized as a fancy way of saying Heatley wanted to see what other teams got into the picture, like maybe San Jose.
OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports moving Heatley won't be easy for the Senators given his expensive contract and having six weeks to go until the start of training camp. Sources claim the San Jose Sharks might be the only option and neither side wants Heatley reporting to Senators training camp. Garrioch reports sources claim the Senators rejected an offer from the Sharks of Jonathan Cheechoo, Christian Ehrhoff and a first round pick. Sharks captain Patrick Marleau's name never came up in trade talks.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Well that shoots down my theory that the Heatley camp might've been keeping the Oilers open as an option if no other club on his wish list expressed interest in him. The Sharks might be talking with the Senators but Heatley's expensive contract would be very difficult for San Jose GM Doug Wilson to take on. Wilson isn't going to give up much more than that rumored offer for Heatley. As for the Oilers I think they might explore options of their own to land a sniper for Ales Hemsky's line.
