Are the Niedermayer brothers interested in playing for the Canucks? Get the details plus the latest on Francois Beauchemin.

TSN.CA: citing reports from The Team 1040 in Vancouver reported the agent for the Niedermayer brothers claims his clients would be interested in joining the Canucks next season. Agent Kevin Epp claimed the brothers, who are natives of Cranbrook BC, will consider all options this summer but with the Winter Olympics being held in 2010 in Vancouver that would make the city an attractive destination. The brothers, who played for the Anaheim Ducks, are unrestricted free agents this summer.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Jim Jamieson reports however "a lot of distance will need to be traveled" to bring Scott and perhaps Rob to Vancouver. Scott has previously told reporters he was uncertain if he'd continue playing after this season but if he did he'd like to return to Anaheim and his family loves living in Southern California. Re-signing Scott is the Ducks top priority although they have some cap issues, as could the Canucks if they re-sign the Sedin twins.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: My thanks to everyone who sent this in. If the Canucks re-sign the Sedins they won't have the money to sign the Niedermayers. If they don't I suspect GM Mike Gillis would make his priority replacing the Sedins as their loss would gut the Canucks first line, something the Niedermayers couldn't replace.

DUCKS WEEKLY: During an interview with GM Bob Murray he appeared to suggest veteran forward Teemu Selanne could return next season, saying "if he still likes going to the rink he'll play".

LA PRESSE: Mathias Brunet reports unless there's a surprising reversal of position Ducks defenseman Francois Beauchemin will test this summer's UFA market. Beauchemin was told Saturday by GM Bob Murray that he would not receive a contract offer as the status of defenseman Scott Niedermayer is currently undetermined. If Niedermayer retires or signs elsewhere the Ducks could afford to re-sign Beauchemin. He also suggested he'd be willing to return with the Montreal Canadiens, the club which drafted him but lost him via waivers but noted the Habs have many decisions to make, including the status of Mike Komisarek who like Beauchemin is also a UFA.

SPECTOR'S NOTE:  The Ducks won't be able to make any significant signings regarding their defense corps until they find out from Niedermayer what his plans will be. He's assured Murray he'll let him know by the draft weekend.
