The latest on the Sharks, Maple Leafs, Sabres and Predators.
SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS: David Pollak reports Patrick Marleau won't be wearing the "C" when the Sharks begin training camp, as head coach Todd McLellan said "as of now...nobody is our captain". Marleau had been the Sharks captain since January 2004 but his leadership was questioned following the club's disappointing playoff performance last season after winning the President's Trophy for finishing first overall in the regular season standings.SPECTOR'S NOTE: The rumormongers will point to this as proof positive Marleau will be dealt but GM Doug Wilson has given no indication that's the case, nor has Marleau, who has a "no-trade" clause and is in the final season of his contract, sought a trade. Perhaps later in the upcoming season this might change but for now I wouldn't leap to conclusions.
SUN MEDIA: Steve Simmons reports former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios, who's currently working for Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Ron Wilson at the US Olympic hockey orientation camp, if the Leafs might be interested in adding him to their roster.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: As Simmons points out, defense may be one area where the Leafs don't need help.
BUFFALO NEWS: John Vogl reports former Sabres enforcer Andrew Peters would love to stay in Buffalo but the 29-year-old UFA assumes the Sabres won't re-sign him. Peters said he's received interest from several teams, including the New Jersey Devils.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Peters could be signed over the next several weeks if he's getting some interest from other clubs.
SUNSENTINEL.COM: Steve Gorten recently reported Panthers head coach Peter DeBoer doesn't know if management will add another free agent winger but isn't opposed to the idea.
