Did Marleau Reject Trade to Ottawa?

A report in yesterday's Orange County Register claimed Patrick Marleau rejected a trade to Ottawa as part of a three-way deal.

ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER: reported yesterday " a proposed three-team that would've sent Ottawa's Dany Heatley to San Jose fell through when Sharks captain Patrick Marleau refused to waive his "no-trade" clause".

SAN JOSE MERCURY-NEWS: David Pollak reports Sharks GM Doug Wilson denied the story, saying Marleau has not been asked to waive his clause. Pollak dismissed the rumor, calling it "amazingly thin" and "not the kind of thing you'd expect to find on a mainstream newpaper's web site. He contacted the Register's hockey writer Dan Wood about the rumor and he said he had no idea how it got there.

THE GLOBE AND MAIL (VIA CTVOLYMPICS.CA): Eric Duhatschek reports Marleau also denied it when he was asked about the story yesterday during Team Canada's Olympic orientation camp. When asked specifically however if the Sharks had asked him to waive his clause Marleau said he'd prefer to keep that information to himself, leading Duhatschek to suggest Marleau didn't completely rule it out. Duhatschek reports an NHL source claims the Sharks and Senators had discussed a potential deal for Heatley but that the Sharks preference was to move winger Jonathan Cheechoo.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: My thanks to everyone who sent this links to me. I received the OC Register story yesterday but given how thin the report was I declined to post it until I heard and read more information. Like Pollak I was suspicious about the validity of it given the lack of details. It could be this story may have been the result of a prankster, especially since the paper's hockey writer had no idea how the story got on the web site.

Marleau needs a good year as this is a contract year with UFA looming at the end of the season. Cheechoo was one of the few Sharks that showed up to play against Anaheim in last year's playoffs, he irritated Pronger into taking several stupid penalties and held his own against the much bigger Pronger.

Cheechoo is a piece of crap now. The guy has always had skates of concrete and all that hitting he did in his first few NHL years has taken a major toll on his ability to shoot the puck. This bum is KHL bound, no doubt.

And really...gameon63...you must be on Cheechoo's nuts because nobody played good for that team last year in the playoffs. One and done again!

game is right though, Pronger took a few stupid penalties against cheechoo, and mike you are also right about cheechoo's skates, he sometimes looks like Bambi on ice.
Marleau should have an great year, last season he played great, everyone just wants to point a finger after the playoffs at the biggest target and say its their fault, but if you were going to point fingers at who was to blame for last years playoff exit you would need more than 20 fingers.

Why would Ottawa want anythng to do with Cheechoo. he is a one season wonder that cashed in on that one year and now is WAY overpaid. If they are going to take Cheechoo, SJ better be giving them Setogutchi in the deal as well. But lets face it, SJ doesn't really have any good prospects to trade for Ott, certainly no one that comes close to Cogliano at least

"TheMike"... really? That's funny because I seem to remember the line getting most of the hype in the playoffs for the Sharks was Roenick-Mitchell-Cheechoo...

And as far as Marleau taking the blame goes, considering he and Cheechoo are the only ones that have had consistent playoff success for the team, it sure is funny that those are the two guys always involved in rumors...
