Updates on Roberto Luongo, Mike Comrie and Phil Kessel, plus find out which former Maple Leaf will be given a tryout with Toronto.
VANCOUVER PROVINCE/VANCOUVER SUN: reported Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo and general manager Mike Gillis have agreed to a deadline for getting the goalie under a new contract beyond the upcoming season. Both agree they wish to have a deal done before the start of training camp on September 13th. Gillis remains confident a deal will be in place before then.
THE GLOBE & MAIL: reported Luongo and Gillis denied reports they'd agreed on a six-year contract worth $6.5 million per season.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: And no, Luongo won't be traded if there's not contract in place by September 13th!
TWITTER: Dan Tencer of CHED 630 denied a rumor the Edmonton Oilers had signed former Oiler Mike Comrie but added he was led to believe it's not outside the realm of possibility.
EDMONTON JOURNAL: David Staples looks at whether or not it's worthwhile for the Oilers to bring back Comrie, suggesting it might be worthwhile if he were to play as he did when he helped the Ottawa Senators reach the 2007 Stanley Cup Final.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Lots of speculation the Oilers have either already signed Comrie or have made a one-year offer but nothing confirmed via the media. Given the circumstances which led to his departure from Edmonton it would be a puzzling move by the Oilers.
NEW YORK POST: Mark Everson reports time is running out for the Rangers to renew interest in Boston's Phil Kessel or for the New Jersey Devils to jump into the bidding. Everson writes the Bruins have no cap space remaining and would have to "dismantle their team"to fit him under their cap by October 1st. The Rangers are believed to have talked seriously with the Bruins about Kessel but not lately and at least two other teams are believed to have jumped into the bidding. Everson reports beyond October 1st the Bruins wouldn't be able to match any offer sheets for Kessel and noted he'd fill a need for both the Rangers and Devils for a first line center.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Everson suggested Kessel, who's recovering from off-season shoulder surgery, might be ready to skate when training camp opens but reports this summer out of Boston claim the earliest he could return to action is November. The Rangers have little cap space to submit an offer sheet and while the Devils have over $5 million in available space it's doubtful GM Lou Lamoriello would pitch $4.5 million or more per season for Kessel so if those two clubs want him they'll have to trade for him.
THE GLOBE AND MAIL: Tim Wharnsby reports the Toronto Maple Leafs have granted a tryout to former Leaf Jason Allison, who last played in 2005-06. Wharnsby suggests if Allison can demonstrate a "new found passion" for the game and hasn't lost his offensive flair he could be a valuable addition to the Leafs offense.
