TSN.CA: reports veteran forward Brendan Shanahan has announced he won't be playing for the New Jersey Devils this season. Shanahan did not say if he was retiring but will take a couple of weeks to talk over his future plans with his family. Shanahan said he's met with Devils GM Lou Lamoriello and head coach Jacques Lemaire and the decision was mutual and amicable.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Surprising move by Shanahan and hopefully more details behind this decision will be revealed soon.

**UPDATE** Tom Gulitti of Northjersey.com reports Lamoriello and Lemaire made the decision to dump Shanahan because of the play of young wingers Matt Halischuk and Ilkka Pikkarainen. They didn't feel it was fair to Shanahan to use him as a fourth-line winger. (Hat tip to Kukla's Korner).
