Various sources report veteran forward Brendan Shanahan has officially announced his retirement after 21 NHL seasons.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: I can't say this is unexpected after the Devils told Shanahan they would not require his services for this season. He had a long, prolific career but it was apparent over the past couple of season age was catching up with him. I would expect he'll likely play some sort of role within the NHLPA as the association attempts to rebuild.
