Blues & Canucks Talking Trade?

Reports of Canucks management scouting the Blues has given rise to talk of a potential trade. Read on for the latest speculation.

THE GLOBE & MAIL: Matt Sekeres recently reported Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis was spotted in Montreal watching the latest Canadiens-St. Louis Blues game, leading to speculation something lured him there to watch those two clubs. Sekeres mentioned Gillis made an offer sheet to Blues center David Backes in July 2008 which the Blues were forced to match, and noted the Canucks could use a third line center as well as a defenseman. Sekeres also noted a report in the Winnipeg Sun that Blues president John Davidson was seen there in early January scouting the Manitoba Moose, the Canucks farm team. Sekeres speculates he might've been there to watch goalie Cory Schneider although the Canucks probably aren't interested in moving him.

STLTODAY.COM: Jeff Gordon commented on the Sekeres report and found it interesting Backes was scratched from the Blues game last night against Ottawa with an "upper body issue." The Canucks could be seeking depth for their injury-ravaged defense corps and Gordon observed the Blues scratched defenseman Mike Weaver and played veteran Darryl Sydor, and also suggested the Blues might consider moving pending UFA Carlo Colaiacovo at the trade deadline rather than attempt to re-sign him.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: There appears to be something brewing here between the two clubs, although a potential move might depend on if Blues management still believe they have a shot at making the playoffs or if they decide instead to start rebuilding now for next season.
