Updates on Ryan O’Reilly and Shane Doan, plus Blues GM Doug Armstrong addresses recent trade speculation.
THE DENVER POST: Nick Groke reports the recent improvement of Colorado Avalanche forward Ryan O’Reilly has coincided with the recent spate of trade rumors about the 2014 Lady Byng Trophy winner. Groke notes O’Reilly’s difficult contract negotiation history with the club is fueling the speculation. While potential trade partners could include teams looking to separate themselves from the playoff pack (like Montreal) or playoff bubble teams like Toronto or Winnipeg, Groke claims all’s quiet in early January. O’Reilly claims he doesn’t pay attention to the speculation.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: You can read my take on the O’Reilly rumors here.
STLTODAY.COM: Jeremy P. Rutherford reports Blues GM Doug Armstrong acknowledged the trade rumors swirling around his recently-struggling club of late, but insists once again deals are unlikely.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Like any GM worth his salt, Armstrong isn’t about to tip his hand as to any deals he could be working on. I don’t doubt he’s probably fielding inquiries from other clubs, but despite his team’s recent struggles there’s no reason for Armstrong to make a significant move right now. I believe he’ll keep an eye on the trade market between now and the March trade deadline and if there’s a deal to be had to help his team, he’ll pursue it.
EDMONTON JOURNAL: Jim Matheson dismisses recent speculation suggesting the Arizona Coyotes could trade captain Shane Doan. Matheson believes more likely trade candidates are pending UFAs like Antoine Vermette and Martin Erat.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I would add defenseman Zbynek Michalek among them. Unless Doan demands a trade, he’s not going anywhere.
