Latest on Dion Phaneuf, Erik Karlsson, Sergei Gonchar and Chris Higgins, plus updates on the Flames, Oilers and Jets.
NATIONAL POST: Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf is listed as week-to-week with an upper-body injury.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Oh no, that’ll hurt the Leafs efforts to swap him for LA Kings center Mike Richards! (disengages sarcasm mode)
OTTAWA SUN: Erik Karlsson was named one of the NHL’s three stars for the week ending Jan. 25.
MONTREAL GAZETTE: Defenseman Sergei Gonchar is proving his worth to the Canadiens on the ice and as a mentor to their young blueliners.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Gonchar’s NHL career is winding down but his acquisition earlier this season was one of GM Marc Bergevin’s savvier moves. He’s helped provide some leadership and stability to the Habs blueline.
THE PROVINCE: Canucks forward Chris Higgins’ focus on defense is hurting his offensive numbers. He’s on pace for career lows in goals and points.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: If Higgins was employed as a bottom-six forward this wouldn’t be an issue, but the Canucks use him on their second line. No wonder there’s rumors of late claiming the Canucks are shopping for a top-six forward.
CALGARY SUN: The Flames are keeping hot-shot rookie goalie Joni Ortio with their AHL affiliate, meaning Jonas Hiller and Karri Ramo must step up their play.
EDMONTON SUN: Despite being out of the playoff picture, the Oilers are trying to maintain a positive outlook.
WINNIPEG SUN: The MTS Centre is getting a new scoreboard and 278 more seats as part of a $12 million upgrade.
