Game recaps, plus updates on the Sedins, Dion Phaneuf and Devante Smith-Pelly, the latest on the Jets, and long-time Oilers locker-room attendant Joey Moss is inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame.
CALGARY SUN: In what could be his final game with the Calgary Flames, winger Curtis Glencross scored a key goal which helped his club rally to a 3-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Glencross is expected to be dealt by the March 2 trade deadline. If so, he made his last game with the Flames a memorable one.
OTTAWA SUN: Senators call-up Andrew Hammond collected his third straight win and first NHL shutout as he backstopped his club to a 3-0 win over the Anaheim Ducks.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Hammond’s carried the Senators to wins over two strong teams (Anaheim and Montreal) plus a scrappy Florida Panthers club. This could be the start of a goaltending controversy in Ottawa.
THE VANCOUVER SUN: As injuries mount for the Canucks, the Sedin twins have earned praise for their leadership and spirit. The Canucks yesterday confirmed goalie Ryan Miller is out four-to-six weeks with a sprained knee.
TORONTO SUN: Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf (wrist/hand injury) returns to the lineup tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers.
MONTREAL GAZETTE: Newly-acquired Canadiens winger Devante Smith-Pelly makes his Habs debut tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
WINNIPEG SUN: By acquiring winger Jiri Tlusty, Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff has sent a message to his team that he will do what he can to help them clinch a playoff berth this season.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s Cheveldayoff’s second significant trade this month, and one which should offset the loss of Mathieu Perreault to injury. I still think he’ll continue shopping around for another top-nine forward, drawing from his blueline depth as bait.
EDMONTON SUN: Long-time Oilers locker-room attendant Joey Moss has been inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame.
