Game recaps, updates on Evander Kane, P.K. Subban, Chris Phillips and Derek Dorsett, and the Maple Leafs getting in on the Connor McDavid sweepstakes.
CALGARY SUN: Kris Russell, Jiri Hudler and Mason Raymond scored and goalie Jonas Hiller made 28 saves to lead the Calgary Flames to a 3-1 win over the San Jose Sharks. The Flames have won three in a row, eight of their last ten and are tied with the Sharks for second in the Pacific Division.
EDMONTON JOURNAL: Marc-Andre Fleury picked up his league-leading seventh shutout of the season as the ittsburgh Penguins blanked the Edmonton Oilers 2-0. . Evgeni Malkin and former Oiler David Perron scored the game’s only goals.
WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: The Jets made Evander Kane a healthy scratch during their recent game in Vancouver for violation of the team’s dress code, as he showed up for a team meeting in sweats rather than a suit.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: This will almost surely send the Kane trade rumor mill into overdrive. It remains to be seen how Kane and the Jets handle this situation going forward. As the report notes, Kane is apparently playing hurt and could decide to shut it down for the season if he’s miffed over the punishment. If he is nursing an injury it could affect his trade value. GM Kevin Cheveldayoff has shown tremendous patience with Kane. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the coming days.
LA PRESSE: The NHL has fined Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban $2,000.00 for diving.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I’m a Subban fan, but even I can admit he needs to stop embellishing to draw penalties.
OTTAWA SUN: Long-time Senators defenseman Chris Phillips will set a franchise record for most games played (1,179) when he takes to the ice tonight against the Washington Capitals.
THE PROVINCE: Canucks enforcer Derek Dorsett leads the NHL this season in fighting majors, but he’s more than just a goon.
TORONTO SUN: The Maple Leafs free fall could improve their chances of getting into the Connor McDavid sweepstakes.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: As I recently told one of my friends (who’s a Leafs fan) who noted this possibility, “When wishful thinking is all you’ve got to cling to….”
Lyle….why ya gotta be like that?
And honestly because we are talking bot the Leafs, why oh why do I get the feeling that the with the way Leafy things go that the Kings will end up winning the lottery?
Epic battle this weekend Oilers Leafs.
A video gone viral on You Tube written by a Leaf fan to the tune of Christine Aguilera’s “Say Something” called Do Something.

I think it’s wonderful to see P.K. Subban’s diving and embellishment talents finally being recognized. It’s way overdue.
Regarding Kane, if he was scratched for wearing a track suit then I guess there isn’t much flexibility with the team’s dress code. I am not sure this is the hill either party wants to die on, but team rules are team rules- even if Kane doesn’t want to look at it that way. Business suits are great and all, but really? These guys aren’t businessmen. Just waiting for the league to put advertising on the suits, right after the uni’s.
Team rules apply to the entire team. When you flaunt the rules you’re saying you are above the team. This isn’t Maurice’s first rodeo so I imagine the healthy scratch may have been a culmination of a few incidents
Why not sit the kid down and have a good long conversation with him after the meeting and then decide if you want to scratch him for that night or not. Give him a pass so he can play in front of friends and family and scratch him the following game?
The situation with him isn’t getting any better with this heavy handedness. Why keep on with the same approach if it isn’t working, find a more creative solution?
There appears to be a lot more to this story than was originally thought. If true then it will make him more difficult to move should Winnipeg decide to go that route.
