The latest from TSN and ESPN on Evander Kane, Jaromir Jagr, Tyler Myers, Cam Atkinson and more.
Latest on Evander Kane, Jaromir Jagr and Cam Atkinson.
TSN: Bob McKenzie claims the Buffalo Sabres could be the most aggressive suitors for Winnipeg Jets sidelined left wing Evander Kane. McKenzie notes they’ve got the Blues and Islanders first-round picks (they won’t part with their own, which could be first overall) plus depth in prospects, plus the Sabres can offer up veterans like Chris Stewart and Drew Stafford. McKenzie also claims the Jets and Sabres previously discussed a deal involving defenseman Tyler Myers and he wonders if Myers could get worked into the equation…Darren Dreger adds that pressure to make the playoffs could also factor into a trade of Kane…Pierre LeBrun believes the Vancouver Canucks are also interested in Kane, who’s a Vancouver native, but they might prefer pursuing him in the offseason as they don’t want to part with a roster player now…Dreger claims Devils GM Lou Lamoriello still believes his team is in the playoff chase. Jaromir Jagr doesn’t want to bail. It’s believed they could revisit this in a week or so…LeBrun claims the Boston Bruins have contacted the Columbus Blue Jackets regarding winger Cam Atkinson, who’s a restricted free agent this summer.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Sabres are well situated to make a strong pitch for Kane. I think it’ll depend upon how much pressure Jets management feels to move Kane at the deadline. If they’re playing better between now and March 2, they could wait until the summer to deal him, when there’s bound to be more suitors and better offers…The Devils are 12 points out of playoff contention. Jagr will be on the move by the deadline…Interesting to see the Bruins having interest in Atkinson. Looks like they could consider other options if the Sabres don’t lower their asking price for Stewart.
More on Kane plus some Flyers speculation.
NICHOLS ON HOCKEY: Bob McKenzie believes the Ottawa Senators are “somewhat interested” in Evander Kane, but they’re unwilling to part with a good young player like Mark Stone…Darren Dreger believes the Calgary Flames could be among the suitors for Kane.Pierre LeBrun believes the Philadelphia Flyers could be active at the trade deadline though not as busy as might be expected, perhaps a move or two to revamp their blueliner.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I don’t think the Senators will part with any of their good young players for Kane, plus he’s a high-salaried player ($5.25 million annual cap hit), which might not be feasible for the cost-conscious Senators…The only reason I see for the Flames to pursue Kane is they’ll likely lose Curtis Glencross to free agency. The Jets could be unwilling to ship Kane to a Western Canadian rival like Calgary or Vancouver. My bet is the Jets give priority to offers from Eastern clubs…I know the Flyers have been linked by some rumormongers to Kane, but I don’t see the fit. The Flyers desperately need to upgrade their blueline, not add another high-salaried forward.
Rumblings from Pierre LeBrun.
ESPN.COM: Pierre LeBrun reports the Bruins still have interest in Buffalo’s Chris Stewart but they’re also looking at Columbus’ Cam Atkinson and might also like Toronto’s Mike Santorelli…The Vancouver Canucks are considering their options regarding Winnipeg’s Evander Kane. While the sidelined winger can’t help them this season, if the Canucks opt to wait until the summer to make a pitch there’s a risk another club could acquire him at the trade deadline…The Rangers are believed seeking a short-term backup for Cam Talbot, who’s filling in for sidelined starter Henrik Lundqvist…Ducks GM Bob Murray denies having trade talks with Buffalo Sabres GM Tim Murray, claiming the two last spoke to each other at the GM meetings in November.
