Latest Bruins rumors.
CSNNE.COM: Joe Haggerty lists the Boston Bruins trade priorities approaching the March 2 deadline as “an offensively dangerous right wing that’s preferably big and strong”, “a top-four defenseman to pair with Dennis Seidenberg” and a reliable veteran backup goaltender. His suggested trade targets include Arizona’s Antoine Vermette and Keith Yandle, Buffalo’s Chris Stewart, Edmonton’s Jordan Eberle and Jeff Petry, New Jersey’s Marek Zidlicky and Michael Ryder, Dallas’ Erik Cole, Calgary’s Curtis Glencross and Toronto’s Joffrey Lupul.
ESPN.COM: Pierre LeBrun reports the Bruins are now in the hunt for Vermette, joining the Chicago Blackhawks. He also reports the Bruins have interest in Erik Cole and Columbus’ Cam Atkinson.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I think the Bruins best bets are Stewart, Petry, Zidlicky, Ryder and Cole. Eberle’s not avaiable, Vermette and Yandle will cost too much and they don’t need to take on Lupul’s $5.25 million annual salary unless they’re willing to take back a bad contract in return.
Latest on the Red Wings and Blackhawks.
NICHOLS ON HOCKEY: TSN’s Darren Dreger said he wouldn’t be surprised if a team like the Detroit Red Wings circled back on a player like Toronto’s Dion Phaneuf at the 11th hour in hopes of landing him by convincing the Leafs to pick up part of his contract…SPORTSNET’s Elliotte Friedman speculates the Chicago Blackhawks could be attempting to land Antoine Vermette and Zbynek Michalek from the Arizona Coyotes.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I still don’t see how Phaneuf addresses the Wings need for a right-handed top-four defenseman. Assuming they want him, the Leafs either have to absorb part of his salary or take back a toxic contract (like Stephen Weiss) in return.
Updates on the Capitals.
CSNWASHINGTON.COM: Chuck Gormley speculates if the Capitals are pursuing a forward they could look at Dallas’ Erik Cole or Vernon Fiddler. He notes the Stars have scouted the Capitals in several recent games. The Caps could also use a depth defenseman and Gormley suggests Colorado’s Jan Hejda could be an option.
