SPORTSNET reports the Ottawa Senators have re-signed defenseman Marc Methot to a four-year deal worth $4.9 million per season.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: That takes Methot off the trade market. There was talk of the Senators moving him if he was unsigned by the deadline. And no, I don’t see this as a “sign-and-trade” deal. Those are rarer than hen’s teeth. The deal also reportedly comes with a modified no-trade clause (ten teams he’ll reportedly accept a trade to).
Methot missed considerable time this season to a back injury, but when healthy he’s part of an effective pairing with Senators captain Erik Karlsson. They obviously wanted to keep him and he was keen to stay. It was originally believed Methot sought $5.5 million per season, while the Senator reportedly countered with $4.6 million.
Both sides get what they want. Methot stays where he’s happy and earns a decent raise, while the Senators keep one of their best defensemen for a reasonable term.
Very happy to be “stuck” with Methot for four more years! Had we had him with the team for even half of the games he missed, we would be fighting for a playoff spot.
I agree , and he stabilizes and improves Erik Karlsson’s game in a major way , a great chemistry between the two.
Happy to see Methot stay and accept a home-town discount. However, He would have easily been worth $5M per year. While he got close with $4.9M It’s a bit upseting to see the Senators organization being so cheap. While it’s nice to see players from Ottawa on the Sens, I wouldn’t be happy if my organization used it against me during negotiations to the extent the Sens have with some of their players. Not sure but it seems like this is a reoccurring process. They need to be careful not to piss people off and not to take advantage. What will happen with Ceci?
I believe it’s a fair deal for both sides and although there’s no way of really knowing, probably not significantly less than what he would have received on the open market. Remember, it isn’t just him making Karlsson look better but also Karlsson making him look better. His back issues can’t be ignored either. As a Sen’s fan, glad they were able to re-sign him.
