The New Jersey Devils have traded defenseman Marek Zidlicky to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a conditiona third-round pick in 2016.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: That condition is if the Wings reach the Stanley Cup Final, that pick becomes a second rounder.
This is the move I expected the Wings to make. For all the talk about them pursuing a big-ticket player like Toronto’s Dion Phaneuf, I didn’t expect them to seriously pursue that move now. Zidlicky is an experienced puck-moving defenseman who should fit in well on the Wing defense corps as a rental player. He also has a right-handed shot, which they’ve sought throughout this season.
I’m a little surprised the Devils accepted only a conditional third, but perhaps that’s reflective of the market for a 38-year-old rearguard right now.
I believe this is a way better move for the wings. If what I am hearing is true, Weiss, B.Smith and a pick and we pick up most if not of Phanuef’s contract. No thanks! Toronto can choke on it. Makes no sense. phanuef’s contract is for 6 more years. B. Smith is rad at the end of this year and Weiss has only 3 left on his deal. Plus with Franzen out, concussions, Weiss might be overpaid but a necessary evil.
