The NHL trade deadline is 3 pm ET today. Check out the latest rumors as the clock ticks down to the deadline.
Collection of rumors from the Ottawa Sun.
OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports the St. Louis Blues are shopping around for a deal, but they don’t want to give up much in return. There’s speculation forward Patrik Berglund is available…Teams are calling the Ottawa Senators about goalie Robin Lehner and defenseman Jared Cowen but GM Bryan Murray apparently isn’t willing to part with his young players…New Jersey Devils defenseman Marek Zidlicky could attract interest if GM Lou Lamoriello is willing to move him…The Buffalo Sabres still hope to move right wing Chris Stewart. The Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning and possibly the Blues could be interested…The Toronto Maple Leafs could be today. All eyes will be upon Phil Kessel, Dion Phaneuf, Joffrey Lupul and Tyler Bozak…The Montreal Canadiens want to add a defenseman and are linked to Toronto’s Roman Polak and Edmonton’s Jeff Petry. There’s talk the Canadiens could be shopping promising goalie Zac Fucale…Anaheim Ducks pending UFA winger Matt Beleskey could attract some interest in the rumor mill.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Seems like Berglund’s been trade bait forever…I don’t see the Sens moving Lehner, Cowen or any of their good young players…I expect Zidlicky to be dealt, though his no-trade clause limits where he can go…The Bruins are probably out of the Stewart bidding after acquiring Brett Connolly earlier this morning from the Bolts. I doubt the Blues are keen to bring Stewart back…I still think Phaneuf and/or Kessel get dealt this summer, but I will admit it’s possible one of them could be traded today. I believe Lupul or Bozak are more likely to go first, especially the latter…If the Canadiens are dangling Fucale I expect they’ll want a young player with term on his contract, not a rental player.
Latest on the Leafs.
SPORTSNET: Nick Kypreos reports the Maple Leafs are trying “real hard” to trade defenseman and team captain Dion Phaneuf before the deadline. Kypreos believes there are teams with interest in Phaneuf, but the Leafs might have to pick up part of his salary (he’s earning $7 million annually) to facilitate a deal.
TORONTO SUN: Rob Longley reports of whispers around the NHL the Detroit Red Wings have interest in Phaneuf, but the Leafs must retain part of the blueliner’s salary. Tyler Bozak is also believed available, and the Leafs could move recently-acquired center Olli Jokinen. Joffrey Lupul’s injury history could adversely affect his trade value.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: TSN’s Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger also speculate the Wings could be pursuing Phaneuf, but the blueliner’s big contract is a stumbling block. Since the Clarkson trade, the Leafs have some wiggle room to absorb part of Phaneuf’s salary if they can get a good return. I don’t believe the Wings are willing to part with their good young players or top prospects. There’s growing talk of the two clubs perhaps swapping toxic contracts, with the Leafs sending Phaneuf to the Wings for center Stephen Weiss. That might be the only way Phaneuf ends up in Detroit. We’l know by 3 pm ET today.
Updates on Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Jeff Petry.
SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS: David Pollak reports Sharks management hasn’t asked Joe Thornton or Patrick Marleau to waive their no-trade clauses. Marleau, however, seemed to leave the door open to that possibility if he felt he wasn’t wanted.
EDMONTON JOURNAL: Jonathan Willis notes recent trade rumors suggesting the St. Louis Blues have interest in Oilers blueliner Jeff Petry, but doubts they have the depth in draft picks and prospects to land him. Willis notes trading Petry is a deal Oilers management has to get right.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: If Thornton or Marleau get dealt it could be this summer. As for Petry, he’ll certainly be traded today but I have my doubts he’ll land in St. Louis. The Oilers will want a first- or second-round pick plus a top prospect or good young player. Remains to be seen if they’ll get that return, of course, but they will seek a high price.
Latest on the Devils, Senators, Jets, Red Wings, Stars and Wild.
NJ.COM: Rich Chere reports today could be a busy one for New Jersey Devils GM Lou Lamoriello. There’s reports of interest in defenseman Marek Zidlicky. “The Devils also have Scott Gomez, Jordin Tootoo, Michael Ryder and Martin Havlat available to teams looking to add depth,” writes Chere.
OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports not to expect a splash at the deadline by the recently-surging Senators. Four players worth watching are Patrick Wiercioch, Eric Gryba, Chris Phillips and Colin Greening.
WINNIPEG SUN: Ken Wiebe reports that, despite the Jets recent acquisition of forward Lee Stempniak, GM Kevin Cheveldayoff might not be done dealing. Pending free agent winger Michael Frolik has come up in trade rumors but Wiebe doubts he’ll be dealt.
THE DETROIT NEWS: Ted Kulfan reports Red Wings GM Ken Holland continues to work the phones after acquiring winger Erik Cole yesterday from the Dallas Stars. “Players such as defensemen Jeff Petry (Edmonton), Zbynek Michalek (Arizona) and Marek Zidlicky (New Jersey) are available, all right-hand shots who have varying strengths and weaknesses but could have appeal to the Red Wings,” reports Kulfan.
THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Mike Heika reports the Stars might not be done dealing after trading Erik Cole yesterday to Detroit. Pending UFA center Shawn Horcoff is a strong candidate to move, as could Vernon Fiddler or Patrick Eaves.
STARTRIBUNE.COM: Michael Russo reports Minnesota Wild GM Chuck Fletcher doesn’t expect to make a move today.
Note to Nonis,
The team already sucks, make a little more cap room anddon’t hold any salary on Kessel amd Phaneuf. There is no hurry, I repeat there is no hurry. Dont be saddling the team with cap hits going down the road. Gather up some picks try and drop Lupul, Bozak and other easy deals and call it a day…
I repeat the team sucks and there is no hurry.
Thank you
Signed
Reasonable Leaf fan
Shticky.
I have to agree you Shticky, i don’t wanna be tied to a contract 5-6 years after a player’s gone. No rush in moving players today.
Shticky, I use to leaf fans overvaluing their players; however, you under value Kessel. If you have to keep salary for him then Nonis failed and if he doesn’t bring back a boat load of prospects and draft picks, then Nonis failed. 30 to 40 goal scorers are hard to come by. But hey if you want to give him up for 2 second rounders then by all means.
Thats the thing Caper I think you hold on to him unless you get almost exactly what you want for him and hold no salary, not sure how thats undervalued, I wouldnt move him for second round picks,or sending him away just to say you traded Kessel… deal him in the summer, or hold on to him till next year there is no rush.
While you are probably bang on with that assessment re Kessel, if he does stick around just be prepared for several more years of this kind of acrimonious debate about his overall value to a team aside from his goal-scoring abilities, because what you see is what you get – he is NOT going to change the way he approaches the game to become an effective two-way forward. In other words, we’ll still be talking about the pros and cons of Phil Kessel next year – and the year after that – and ….
Thats what you said about Clarkson too no? and Kessel is a better player and less overpaid than that.
Its easy to bag on a team as bad as the Leafs, but there are some very good players there and Kessel is one of them, you just dont give him away just to trade him for the sake of trading him.
Yes, but that’s just background noise. If they trade Kessel then the same exact discussion will shift to Kadri. Just as before Kessel the same conversation was about Sundin. Whoever the best player is on Toronto there is always discussion about how bad/lazy/overpaid/spoiled they are.
Read what I said again. I never said the same thing about Clarkson. What I’m saying in Kessel’s case is, IF he is retained, LeafsNation had better be prepared for more of the same because he is NOT going to suddenly become a different player, and these same arguments will be repeated for as long as the teams struggles – which, by the look of things, will be at least for the next 3 years. That’s ALL I said. As George Santayana observed “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” and with Kessel in the mix there will continue to be those screaming for his scalp every time he goes into one of his prolonged slumps, or dogs it on a glaring backcheck. That is inevitable. That’s all I’m saying. Jaysus, read the bloody thing before you accuse ME of “bagging” on the team.
Wholeheartedly agree. No rush. No holding salary.
I agree. The leafs didn’t need to hold back salary with phaneuf or Kessel today as it will be easier to make a move in the off season.
I think they need to look at things in a 3 year window. For the next three years they shouldn’t be signing UFA’s and guys like Nylander, Reilly, whoever they draft, won’t need real big raises until at least that long. So be willing to take cap for 3 years or less, but don’t hace dead cap space on the book for 6-7 years when you hope to be competitive by then.
By all means take back a bad contract of 3 years or less, or hold back Money on Lupul or bozak to enhance returns but in 3 years the goal shoud be to have only contracts you are happy with and have chosen and none that you are stuck with.
GMTM’s first order of business is to rid the Sabres of Neuvirth…he is the one blowing the tank. lol Wondering if TM waited to long to trade Stewart…did the market dry up for him with all the trades that have gone down?
that one year buyout of Komisarek keeps coming back to haunt TML
For all those who called Coburn a stiff??? Not a bad return. Seriously he his a solid D man who can skate and has size. He will help Tampa out.
Not sure an overpayment on a player = not a stiff
Martin Erat was a stiff.
Not exactly what this Tampa fan wanted to see Yzerman do…I believe it to be a huge overpay.
And getting rid of Gudas? He was the only tough player on a very soft blueline.
This trade is a head-scratcher, at best – And a big disappointment otherwise.
So that’s a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th plus Gudas for Coburn and Timmonen.
I’ll take that as it drops $6.5 million off the books, and removes Timmonens bonuses to next years cap.
Now if we could drop VLC, Umberger, Schenn and Grossmann…we’d be in a lot better place cap wise, and the performance of the team wouldn’t drop too much.
Yes, I know..their contracts are high, but hopefully with all the moves made prior to today, some gm gets desperate and trakes the chance.
Same thinking as most Leaf fans would have.
Nice job by Hextall. Tear it down & build it back up !!
Excellent trade for the Flyers I agree.
Flyers fans are going to love Gudas. I’m a little shocked that Tampa pulled the trigger on this deal.
Hextall has stayed the course and it’s been great to see. Getting the picks are important, but they have to get quality players in June or it’s all for not. I actually think they should deal Del Zotto right now, his value is really high and he’s really one dimensional, Ghost will be on the team next year and he’s a younger, cheaper version of what Del Zotto brings. I actually think they’d another 1st from a desperate team.
When I see what was recieved for Sekeras and Petry I think Tampa over payed for Colburn. Great trade by Phillly.
Petry for picks to the Habs…good deal for both
This is why its important to ALWAYS wear your helmet kids.. MacT was the last player to not wear a helmet and he got taken to the cleaners like Monica Lewinskis dress if left in Bill Clintons possession.. 2nd and a 5th for the only defenceman on the team that is a truly NHL defenceman.. I hate being an oilers fans some days..
Ya but he was leaving anyway…chin up Maw lol
srry for the confusion. You and Mawman are 2 good Oiler fans that are pretty on the ball imo. I get you guys mixed up.
MacT was handcuffed a bit by having other teams know that Edmonton felt they may not be able to sign him in the summer.
I’ll predict:
Senators trade Legwand and Condra to Blues for Berglund and Paajarvi
Senators trade Michalek to Flames for Jones
Canadiens trade Eller, Tangradi and Bowman to Coyotes for Korpikoski, Chipchura and Coyotes’ 5th
Leafs trade Jokinen and Booth to Panthers for Upshall and Canadiens 5th (which Panthers own from Weaver trade)
Panthers trade Howden to Jets for Cormier
I can see none of these happening.
That’s a huge overpayment by the blues.
Flames wont take on that contract and underperformance.
Habs wont make that deal. Hinders their depth big time.
Jets like Cormier as a depth grit guy.
Booth and Oli are worth a little more than that. Upshall has been an underachiever his whole career.
“Booth and Oli are worth more than that” – seriously? Booth has 5 points in 40 games and Oli has 7 points in 54 games. These two collectively are worth no more than the proverbial bag of pucks. IMO Florida wants no part of a repeat of these guys. Both will be out of hockey next year.
Agree 100%. Jokinen goes to the Leafs purely as a salary dump in that deal and suddenly his worth elevates? In what universe? Booth is just another Lupul, only in his case he was a bargain-basement pick-up whose spent his whole career with one skate on a banana peel and the other in a ditch.
Very likely won’t happen but I am ok with St. Louis over paying for two aging Sen players.
McGinn to waivers, Sheppard to Rangers. What’s next Doug?
after chewing over the bruins trade for Connolly, I’m ok with it in the fact the player is not a ufa and potentially could be a win. maybe a slight over payment but could be a good fit with more playing time.
Any Goailes traded yet?
We have a goalie trade.
Watching trade centre and the pundits are telling me Nashville needs to make a trade, giving thumbs down to them. Nashville has great D, great Goaltending, Great on the wings, there weakness which goes Agaisnt my option of how to build a team is down the middle and quite frankly here isn’t a centre upgrade out there for them so yes stand pat is exactly what they should do,
They’re just trying to fill dead air for 12 hours when nothing is going on. I think you’re right that there is nothing out there for Nashville.
Totally agree! I find a lot of these “experts” try to paint themselves as much more knowledgeable than us regular hockey fans. Seems like they tend to avoid endorsing the top performing clubs and downplay their post season chances, using whatever argument they can spin, to back up their opinions. I mean, does the addition of Andrej Sekera really make the Kings a legitimate Cup contender? Last time I checked they weren’t even a play-off team. Just because you come from a boxing background, Mr. Simmons, doesn’t mean “the champ is still the champ until someone knocks them off” applies to hockey. Give me a break! Sheesh!
Seeing Philly is only 6 pts out of the wildcard, do you think they take a run at a goalie like Neuvirth?
no they also need major rebuild on defense and 6-12 forwards
now the habs have petry who do they get for a forward Kassian or Stewart hey they just got the Flynn kid out of buffalo hes a good looking kid
Looks less likely that Phanuef and Kessel are going anywhere this season…media interviews would make it seem that Kessel is almost out of patience with the TO media. I would imagine that if he has to put up with another season of the media dumping on him he’ll publicly demand a trade. But as people have pointed out, his contract is a limiting factor to some extent. Phil’s best bet to get traded and have the media back off is to start putting more pucks in the net. If his conditioning is suspect, then maybe the whole team needs to adopt a new philosophy of training and conditioning. Less time on skills and hockey drills, more time on strength and conditioning?
Sharks sign Ben Smith. Thornton finally has a legitimate 1st-line RW.
the Blues have added the final piece to the puzzle, good for them. Seriously though I’m glad Jokinen will get another (2nd) shot at the playoffs after such a long career. I’m surprised Lyle was able to find a pic of him in a Leafs uni for his post, they must be hard to come by.
even Ollie had more overtime pts then Clarkson did
what does that tell you
lol
When you start airing a letter from Leopolds daughter 6 minutes before the deadline…..you may just want to show last nights games. LOL
Now that is in-depth coverage.
Hey, anybody think that Jokinen will return to retire as a Leaf?
FIRE BRIAN MURRAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ummmmmm, why?
“What are you wearing….JAKE from state farm”!….You sound hideous!
Great, now what am I going to do with my Olli Jokinen Leafs jersey..
Hang it up by the new Joakim Lindstrom one.
Fairly successful couple weeks for the Leafs Id say, dropped Holzer and Jokinen for a couple conditional picks, dropped Clarkson, picked up a first second a fourth and a prospect for Winnik Franson and Santorelli, picked up a couple ypung D in Brennan and Erixon…its a start. Would have been nice to move Bozak or Lupul, but didnt hold salary, or make any stupid moves so all in all, pretty decent.
Lets review the Blue Jackets shall we, over 8 mill tied up in Rene Bourque and David Clarkson next year…good luck.
LMFAO … Seriously though no one is ever going to bring up Clarkson’s contract again now.
I don’t understand the Flames pushing out Baertschi for a 2nd rounder .. I know Burke made some comments about him when he first took the job in Calgary. But to just give him away for a mid-second to a division rival is crazy.
Big winner of the day has to be Montreal.
His agent said he wanted out I guess? I like what the Habs and Jets have done probably best, not sure its enough but how they didnt really give up anything vitally important, for what they got is pretty impressive.
Not sure havent been able to find anything really that says to much about it.
Jets did alright to, more depth moves. That team is lacking in top end talent if you ask me but could make some noise.
That Erixon kid TO picked up was a big deal out here, we were forced to trade him cause he wouldn’t sign. The blueline here at that time was fairly deep. I remember hearing he was a sure fire top pairing Dman now sure what happened to his development.
I wonder if any team was close on Kessel or Dion, leaves months of rumors until the draft now.
Seem like a horribly slow day but with 23 trades and a busy couple weeks leading up to the deadline not a bad year I guess. Glad i didn’t waste a vacation day though.
He did ask to be traded.
Player asked for a trade and said he would not resign with the Flames.
Calgary’s hands were tied.
If there really are hockey gods, surely they can’t look favorably upon the blatant attempts by Buff and Zona to rid themselves of any and all possibilities to win any of their remaining games. Here’s hoping McDavid lands anywhere but with either of these two clubs!
I’d rather them go to Arizona or Buffalo than Edmonton.
I hope to god McDavid never wears a Arizona jersey and Buffalo is a close second.
I don’t exactly like the idea of either….but I REALLY hate the idea of Edmonton……again.
Bottom 5
Carolina
Toronto
Arizona
Edmonton
Buffalo
I guess I’m cheering for either Edmonton or Toronto.
Atleast in Edmonton he should have top flight wingers and they will be extremely fun to watch.
If the Leafs win that lottery, Ill probably pass out…just say’n. Honestly Id be prt with any of pretty happy with Hanifin Marner or Strome, McDavid only happensif they win the lottery and no chance the Leafs are bad enough to be bottom 2 now so Im feeling pretty good going forward. Id be fine with Arizona getting him, its going to hurt if the Sabres do…hurt really bad for years.
Pitt management and G.M. JR are idiots, have no idea what they are doing.
I agree with you on those trades
got a lot softer which they where already and lovejoy isn’t an upgrade or the ducks would of kept him
despreres I think was starting to become a well rounded defenseman so he must of fallen out with someone big time
Sven was not resigning with Calgary. Brad Treliving ( his dad Jim is on Shark Tank ) said it was the best offer by far in a very deep draft. Flames for now have 4 picks in the top 50. That is how you rebuild !
SJ Sharks. So pathetic. How do you make a few lackluster moves which makes your team worse in the short-/long-run and not gain any cap space. Not fair to the fans. Not fair.
If the reports of the owner not being happy last year, you have to think big change is coming if they fall short of the conference final, no?
sure. i expect Sharks to squeak into playoffs this year, but something’s gotta give in the off-season. Niemi and Hannan not dressed? did they try and move them, yet failed? probably. no C on anyone’s sweater? that’s a room divided. i know you know what i mean, having played the game at a higher level than most. ownership situation will be interesting this summer. GM or coach is gone, if not both. doubt the latter, cause there is still significant talent on the roster.
if Sharks do make post-season, look for Marleau to be a monster.
