Here’s a collection of the final deals announced leading up to the 3 pm ET trade deadline.
The Buffalo Sabres traded right wing Chris Stewart to the Minnesota Wild for a second-round pick in 2017.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Stewart was a fixture in the rumor mill since November and was linked to the Bruins. Looks like Sabres GM Tim Murray may have missed an opportunity to get a better return had he moved Stewart to the Bruins earlier in the season. Once the Bruins acquired Brett Connolly this morning from the Lightning, it was obvious they were out of the bidding. Stewart is a streaky scorer but plays a physical game. He should be a good rental addition for the Wild as they jockey for a playoff berth in the Western Conference.
The Pittsburgh Penguins traded defenseman Simon Despres to the Anaheim Ducks for blueliner Ben Lovejoy.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Not surprised the Penguins have moved Despres as he was rumored for months to be available. He struggled to fit into the Penguins roster. Perhaps he’ll have better luck with the Ducks. With this move, the Ducks have traded away one of their few right-handed shots for another lefthander. Lovejoy returns to the club where his NHL career began and brings a bit more experience back to the Penguins lineup.
The Sabres also dealt forward Torrey Mitchell to the Montreal Canadiens for a draft pick and a prospect.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s the second Sabre the Canadiens have acquired today, having already dealt for Brian Flynn. As columnist Joe Yerdon noted on Twitter, if you can’t beat the Sabres, acquire their hardest-working players. Mitchell is a Montreal native and sounded thrilled about going home to play for the Canadiens.
The Colorado Avalanche had dealt forward Max Talbot to the Boston Bruins in exchange for Jordan Caron.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: A good depth pickup for the Bruins. Talbot can play all three forward positions and has plenty of playoff experience. He’s also under contract through 2015-16 so he’s not a rental player. Caron struggled to crack the Bruins lineup and will look for a fresh start with the younger Avalanche.
The Toronto Maple Leafs ship defenseman Korbinian Holzer to the Anaheim Ducks for a draft pick.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Ducks add another right-handed shot, having also acquired James Wisniewski from Columbus. Holzer is currently nursing concussion symptoms but expects to return to action soon.
The Calgary Flames trade Sven Baertschi to the Vancouver Canucks for a second-round pick.
The New York Islanders trade Cory Conacher to the Vancouver Canucks for forward Dustin Jeffrey.
