Could the Red Wings signs Cody Franson this summer?

MLIVE.COM: lists some possible free agent blueliners the Detroit Red Wings could pursue this summer. Among the notable: Anaheim’s Francois Beauchemin, Nashville’s Cody Franson, Washington’s Mike Green, Pittsburgh’s Paul Martin, Montreal’s Jeff Petry and Los Angeles’ Andrej Sekera.

DETROIT FREE PRESS: George Sipple reports it’s unlikely trade-deadline acquisition Marek Zidlicky returns with the Wings next season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Once the Wings re-sign key players like Gustav Nyquist, they’ll have plenty of cap space to add a top-four defenseman via free agency, provided they don’t go the trade route first. Green, Franson and Petry were regularly linked to the Wings in the rumor mill this season.

A big move coming this summer for the Stars?

THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Rick Gosselin expects the Stars to make a “dramatic move” this summer to address one of their two biggest needs, a goaltender or a top defenseman, via trade or free agency. Gosselin would love to see the Stars acquire defenseman Brent Seabrook from the cap-strapped Chicago Blackhawks.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Stars management have understandably kept mum as to their possible moves this summer. GM Jim Nill has shown a willingness to make bold moves to improve his club and I expect the same again. They need a goalie who can compete with starter Kari Lehtonen and a true top-two defenseman. If Nill goes the trade route again, he has depth in young assets to offer up to teams that must shed salary this summer to address their needs.

Canucks face a potentially crowded crease.

NBC SPORTS: Jason Brough notes Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Benning is still trying to determine where third-string goalie Jacob Markstrom fits into the club’s future plans. Brough suggests if Markstrom proves capable of backing up Ryan Miller, Benning could trade Eddie Lack, who’s a year away from unrestricted free agency. If not, he’ll try to trade Markstrom.
