The Boston Bruins have traded the rights to center Carl Soderberg to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2016.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Soderberg, 29, is slated to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. The cap-strapped Bruins aren’t able to re-sign him and obviously wanted to get something back, rather than lose him for nothing to free agency.
It’s rumored Soderberg’s seeking $5 million per season. The two-time 40-point scorer will likely have to accept less than that with the Avalanche or whichever team he signs with in the coming days.
What’s interesting about this move is the Avalanche’s biggest need isn’t at center but on defense. This move will surely stoke the trade speculation swirling about Avs center Ryan O’Reilly.
Perhaps Soderberg is to be O’Reilly’s replacement if the Avs trade him for a defenseman? Stay tuned, things are bound to get interesting!
give them back their 6th rounder for insurance if ROR is dealt? Sounds like a decent deal but if he thinks he is getting 5mil per. That is not enough savings if they deal ROR for much of a DMan.
Good on you, Don Sweeney, for getting something back for Soderberg. A6th round pick is better than simply allowing him to walk away.
Smart move
Wish Chiarelli traded him at the deadline might have gotten a second rounder.
Good luck Edmonton with that joker.
Hope he doesn’t trade your superstars for nothing
Lyle great coverage btw.
Quick question:
During free agency a contact is signed lets say for Hamilton in Boston for 8 M would it be rejected outright right away or would a team have time to move money out over the summer?
I’m afraid I don’t understand your question, Russ. Are you talking about an offer sheet?
