Canadiens re-sign Torrey Mitchell, Senators star Bobby Ryan gets married, suggestions on who the Oilers should pursue and the latest Leafs front-office news.
MONTREAL GAZETTE: The Montreal Canadiens re-signed forward Torrey Mitchell to a three-year, $3.6 million contract. Mitchell, 30, was acquired from the Buffalo Sabres at the NHL trade deadline.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Like defenseman Jeff Petry, who was also acquired by the Habs at the deadline, Mitchell fit into the lineup well. His contract is an affordable re-signing, but pushes the Canadiens’ cap payroll for 2015-16 to over $66 million, with Alex Galchenyuk and Brian Flynn to re-sign.
While there’s plenty of space to retain those two, it won’t leave GM Marc Bergevin much wiggle room for other moves this summer or during next season. I expect he’ll be making a move or two in the coming weeks to shed salary and perhaps attempt to bolster his scoring.
OTTAWA SUN: Senators star Bobby Ryan got married this past Saturday.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Congratulations to Ryan and his wife Danielle.
EDMONTON JOURNAL: David Staples suggests the Oilers should look closely at Calgary Flames pending UFA goalie Karri Ramo and New Jersey Devils pending RFA defenseman Adam Larsson.
TORONTO SUN: Oshawa Generals coach D.J. Smith downplayed speculation he could joining the coaching staff of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
