Flames re-sign Mikael Backlund to a 3-year deal.

CALGARY SUN: The Flames re-signed center Mikael Backlund to a three-year contract extension worth an average cap hit of $3.575 million. Backlund was eligible next summer for unrestricted free agency.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Backlund’s had his struggles earlier in his career with the Flames, but has emerged as a solid two-way forward who can play center or wing. Despite playing only 52 games this season, he was among their leaders in takeaways and is among their better puck-possession players. Backlund will ensure the Flames remain very deep at center over the next three seasons.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Less than a week before the upcoming 2015 NHL Draft, the Oilers have fired head amateur scout Stu MacGregor, along with two other amateur scouts and pro scout Morey Gare.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Considering how poorly the Oilers have done outside the first round in recent years, it’s not surprising GM Peter Chiarelli is shaking things up, though the timing is a bit odd.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: Jets forward Mark Scheifele is staging a hockey camp in Winnipeg in support of KidSport.

LA PRESSE: The Montreal Canadiens hope to re-sign restricted free agent forward Brian Flynn.

OTTAWA SUN: The Senators hope to land a good player with the 18th overall pick at the upcoming NHL Draft.
