Oilers to honor former GM Glen Sather, updates on Sven Baertschi and Greg Pateryn plus the Maple Leafs hire a new goalie coach.
EDMONTON JOURNAL: The Edmonton Oilers will honor former head coach and GM Glen Sather with a banner-raising ceremony at Rexall Place on Dec. 11. Sather recently stepped down as GM of the New York Rangers, though he remains their team president. Prior to joining the Rangers in 2000, Sather was GM of the Oilers for 20 years. He was also their head coach from 1979 until 1989, returning briefly to the role in 1993-94. Under his guidance, the Oilers enjoyed their greatest seasons, winning five Stanley Cup from 1984 to 1990.
THE PROVINCE: Limited cap space could make it difficult for the Vancouver Canucks to get RFA forward Sven Baertschi under contract. The Canucks currently have less than $2 million in cap space, while Baertschi’s cap number for last season was $1.425 million. Baertschi was acquired in a trade last season with the Calgary Flames.
TVA SPORTS: Montreal Canadiens defenseman Greg Pateryn hopes to earn a full-time roster spot for 2015-16.
MAPLELEAFS.COM: The Toronto Maple Leafs hired Steve Briere as their new goaltending coach. They also hired Ari Vuori as their Director of European Scouting.
