In the wake of today’s other notable trades (Brandon Saad, Kevin Bieksa) and signings (Dougie Hamilton), here’s a roundup of the other notable NHL transactions (signings, trades and buyouts) that occurred today.
NHL.COM: The Carolina Hurricanes placed winger Alexander Semin on waivers and bought him out of the remaining three years of his contract.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Hurricanes had no choice. They couldn’t bring back this overpaid underachiever for another season.
NBC SPORTS: The Florida Panthers waived winger Brad Boyes for buyout purposes.
DETROIT FREE PRESS: The Red Wings will buy out center Stephen Weiss.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Earlier today, there was talk Pavel Datsyuk’s offseason ankle surgery meant Weiss wouldn’t be bought out. Evidently, the Wings feel they can manage without him.
NHL.COM: The Arizona Coyotes traded forward Lauri Korpikoski to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for center Boyd Gordon.
WINNIPEG SUN: The Winnipeg Jets re-signed winger Drew Stafford to a two-year, $8.7 million contract.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Stafford gets a slight pay bump ($4.35 million per season) over his recent contract ($4 million annually). He fit in very well with the Jets following his trade from the Sabres, netting 19 points in 26 games. It’s an affordable short-term signing which could pay big dividends for the Jets.
NEWSDAY: The New York Islanders re-signed RFA forward Anders Lee to a four-year, $15 million contract. He’ll average $3.75 million annually.
NBC SPORTS: The San Jose Sharks re-signed recently-acquired RFA goalie Martin Jones to a three-year, $9 million contract
THE DETROIT NEWS: The Red Wings re-signed defenseman Brendan Smith to a two-year, $5.5 million contract.
CSNPHILLY.COM: The Philadelphia Flyers signed forward Ryan White to a one-year, $800K contract.
