CALGARY SUN: Among his five burning questions for the final month of the Flames’ offseason, Wes Gilbertson reports the club has three goalies – Jonas Hiller, Karri Ramo and Joni Ortio – under one-way contracts for next season. If the Flames demote Ortio, they risk losing him to another club via waivers. While there’s not a lot of NHL clubs seeking a backup, Gilbertson believes Flames GM Brad Treliving is likely trying to find a taker for one of his netminders. He also speculates Treliving could look for an affordable depth defenseman or forward via free agency willing to accept a two-way deal.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It could take until the end of September for Treliving to find a trade partner for one of his goalies. Like him, Treliving’s rivals will be using training camp and preseason to evaluate their rosters before making any significant trades or signings. The Boston Bruins could seek an experienced backup if Malcolm Subban, Zane McIntyre or Jeremy Smith fail to pan out as Tuukka Rask’s backup.

More additions in store for the Devils? Rich Chere believes we shouldn’t be surprised if New Jersey Devils GM Ray Shero signs another free agent or invites one or two to training camp on a tryout basis. “We’re looking to be in touch with some (player) agents for some free agents”, said Shero. “Or with some teams. Or maybe the possibility of a tryout with one or two guys in training camp. Some guys are still trying to get contracts.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Shero could be looking at adding another veteran forward. perhaps at right wing. Possibilities could include Jiri Tlusty, Brad Boyes or Mike Santorelli.
