Updates on Jeff Petry, Brandon Sutter and Ladislav Smid, plus the latest on the Maple Leafs, Oilers, Senators and Jets in your NHL Canadian Corner.
THE GLOBE & MAIL: Mike Babcock’s handling of the Leafs roster, who plays first-line right wing and who skates with Dion Phaneuf are among the 10 things to watch at this year’s Toronto Maple Leafs training camp.
MONTREAL GAZETTE: Canadiens defenseman Jeff Petry is eager and excited to pick up from where he left off last season.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Petry was outstanding after joining the Habs in a late-season trade from Edmonton. He will be a key part of their defense corps.
THE PROVINCE: Recently-acquired Canucks forward Brandon Sutter hopes his career will flourish in Vancouver.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: He’ll certainly get plenty of opportunities to do so on the retooling Canucks. Sutter will be expected to fill the role of second-line center.
EDMONTON SUN: Oilers veterans intend to do all they can to ease rookie Connor McDavid’s transition to the NHL game.
CALGARY HERALD: Flames defenseman Ladislav Smid (neck injury) still isn’t cleared for contact.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: When Smid is finally healthy enough to return to action, don’t be surprised if he ends up on the trade block. The Flames are very deep on defense now. Smid could become a trade chip to address other needs in their lineup.
OTTAWA CITIZEN: The Senators have made Daniel Alfredsson their senior adviser of hockey operations.
WINNIPEG SUN: No surprises as the Jets release their 55-man training camp roster.
