Latest on Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, the Leafs goaltending, Brett Sutter and more in your NHL Canadian Corner.
EDMONTON SUN: Oilers right wing Jordan Eberle appeared to suffer a shoulder injury during his club’s 4-0 preseason win over the Arizona Coyotes. Meanwhile, speculation abounds the Oilers could make Taylor Hall their new captain.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: No word yet as to the severity of Eberle’s injury, which could be a significant blow for the Oilers if he’s out for any length of time. As for Hall getting the captaincy, that might be the best move for a club relying more and more on young stars like the 23-year-old left wing. Ference has slid down the club’s depth chart and it could be best to shift the captaincy onto a core player.
TORONTO SUN: Who will start in goal for the Maple Leafs on opening night, Jonathan Bernier or James Reimer?
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Bernier’s the de facto starter. Regardless of who has the better preseason record, Bernier will get the call.
THE PROVINCE: Vancouver Canucks center Brandon Sutter isn’t concerned over being held scoreless through three preseason games.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: That’s because it’s preseason. Be concerned if he struggles in the regular season games.
CALGARY HERALD: Jiri Hudler scored twice as the Flames blanked the Colorado Avalanche 2-0 in preseason play.
MONTREAL GAZETTE: The Canadiens have demoted forward Nikita Scherbak to their AHL affiliate in St. John’s.
