In today’s collection of Canadian NHL team news, recaps of the Flames and Maple Leafs’ latest games, plus updates on Carey Price, Darnell Nurse, Alex Burrows and more.
NEWSDAY/CALGARY HERALD: Fran Nielsen scored twice and Jaroslav Halak made 29 saves as the New York Islanders shut out the struggling Calgary Flames 4-0. Flames goaltender Joni Ortio made 31 saves. The Islanders will also be without defenseman Thomas Hickey (lower-body injury) for at least a month.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Flames now fall to 2-7-0 on the season. While there’s plenty of time remaining to reverse their fortunes, they cannot afford to fall much further into their current hole. Despite the loss, Ortio look good in this game, but got little help from his defense and none from his offense. This roster needs a shakeup of some kind, but finding a trade to help them could prove difficult at this time of year.
THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC/TORONTO SUN: Max Domi scored in his return to his hometown and Kyle Chipchura enjoyed a two-point effort as the Arizona Coyotes edged the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3. James van Riemsdyk, Morgan Rielly and Shawn Matthias tallied for the Leafs.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Domi now leads the NHL rookie scoring race. While all the hype was on Edmonton’s Connor McDavid (who’s currently second in rookie scoring) and Buffalo’s Jack Eichel, Domi and teammate Anthony Duclair are enjoying a strong opening month to their NHL careers. Keep an eye on those young Coyotes throughout this season, as they’re legitimate Calder Trophy contenders.
LA PRESSE: A scary moment occurred during the Montreal Canadiens’ practice yesterday, as goaltender Carey Price was struck near his neck with a high shot from Max Pacioretty, leaving him lying on the ice for several long seconds. Fortunately for the Habs, Price wasn’t seriously hurt and practice continued with a stern warning from head coach Michel Therrien to keep the shots low.
EDMONTON SUN: Injuries to Justin Schultz and Griffin Reinhardt forced the Oilers to call up blueliner Darnell Nurse.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Nurse has received rave reviews for his performance thus far with the Oilers AHL affiliate in Bakersfield. It’ll be interesting to see if he’ll stick with the big club full time this season.
THE VANCOUVER SUN: Longtime Canucks winger Alex Burrows may be in decline, but he’s becoming a leader among the club’s younger players.
OTTAWA SUN: The Senators will likely be without defenseman Marc Methot (concussion) and forward Curtis Lazar (upper body) for Wednesday’s game against the Calgary Flames. Winger Mike Hoffman (groin injury) remains questionable for that game.
NHL PLAYER SAFETY: has fined Winnipeg Jets forward Alexander Burmistrov “$4,166.67, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for elbowing Minnesota’s Jared Spurgeon.”
