CHICAGO TRIBUNE/NEWSDAY: Rookie Artemi Panarin and veteran Patrick Kane each had a goal and two assists to lead the Chicago Blackhawks to a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders. Cal Clutterbuck tallied for the Islanders.
THE TAMPA TRIBUNE/THE BUFFALO NEWS: Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov netted their first goals of the season as the Tampa Bay Lightning downed the Buffalo Sabres 4-1, with the Sabres only goal coming from Nicolas Deslauriers.
SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS/ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER: Patrick Marleau scored twice and Martin Jones made 27 saves for his first shutout of the season as the San Jose Sharks blanked the Anaheim Ducks 2-0 in the latter’s season opener.
CSNWASHINGTON.COM/NORTHJERSEY.COM: An end-to-end goal by Alexander Ovechkin snapped a 2-2 tie and powered the Washington Capitals to a 5-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils. Mike Cammalleri had a goal and an assist in a losing cause for the Devils.
THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC/PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE: Mike Smith made 27 saves backstopping the Arizona Coyotes to a 2-1 upset of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Phil Kessel scored his first goal of the season, his first as a Penguin.
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS/THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH: Henrik Lundqvist made 37 saves and rookie Oscar Lindberg scored twice to give the New York Rangers a 5-2 triumph over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Lindberg currently leads all rookies in goals and is tied for the overall league lead. Ryan Johansen and Boone Jenner replied for the Jackets.
THE DETROIT NEWS/THE NEWS & OBSERVER: Teemu Pulkkinen scored two goals in less than two minutes in the third period to rally the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Earlier in the day, the Hurricanes placed defenseman James Wisniewski (knee injury) on IR.
TWINCITIES.COM/STLTODAY.COM: Charlie Coyle scored twice and Zach Parise netted his fourth of the season as the Minnesota Wild edged the St. Louis Blues 3-2. Alex Steen and Vladimir Tarasenko replied for the Blues, who lost rookie Robby Fabbri after taking an elbow to the head in the first period.
THE DENVER POST/THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Gabriel Landeskog enjoyed a four-point performance (two goals, two assists) as the Colorado Avalanche overcame a 3-1 deficit to down the Dallas Stars 6-3. Stars captain Jamie Benn was held off the scoresheet while linemate Tyler Seguin collected an assist.
MIAMI HERALD/PHILLY.COM: Vincent Trochek had a four-point game (one goal, three assists) while Jaromir Jagr and Reilly Smith each scored twice as the Florida Panthers thumped the Philadelphia Flyers 7-1. The Panthers’ first four goals were the fastest (6:46) to start a season in modern NHL history.
ESPN.COM: The NHL says the settlement reached between the Los Angeles Kings and center Mike Richards doesn’t circumvent the salary cap. In June, the Kings terminated Richards’ contract following an incident at a Canada-US border checkpoint over his possession of a controlled substance. The NHLPA had filed a grievance on his behalf. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports the term of the payout for Richards will be on the Kings’ cap until 2031.
