RECENT TRADES, SIGNINGS AND WAIVER NEWS.

TSN: The Carolina Hurricanes traded left wing Kris Versteeg from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for prospect Valentin Zykov and a conditional fifth-round draft pick on Sunday night.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: With Marian Gaborik sidelined by injury and the Chicago Blackhawks making several notable recent trades, it was inevitable the Kings would make a move to bolster their depth on the wing. Versteeg has a decent scoring touch and plenty of playoff experience, which should make him a worthwhile and affordable rental for the Kings. The Hurricanes pick up a once-promising prospect in Zykov who’s struggled over the last two years. Perhaps he can reverse his fortunes with the rebuilding ‘Canes.

TORONTO SUN: The Toronto Maple Leafs shipped forward Daniel Winnik and Anaheim’s fifth-round pick in 2016 to the Washington Capitals in exchange for the Capitals second-rounder in the 2016 draft,  defenceman Connor Carrick and forward Brooks Laich.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Capitals not only boost their checking-line depth by acquiring Winnik, they also offload the remaining year and $4.5 million cap hit of Laich’s contract, freeing up a little over $2 million in additional cap space for the Capitals to perhaps make another move before today’s trade deadline. With defenseman John Carlson on LTIR, it’s expected the Caps will pursue a defenseman today. As for the Leafs, they pick up another second-round pick in this year’s draft, while Laich fills a roster spot for the depleted Leafs. It remains to be seen if they’ll retain him for next season.

THE WASHINGTON POST: in a swap of minor leaguers, the Capitals acquired forward Ryan Bourque from the New York Rangers in exchange for forward Chris Brown.

CSNPHILLY.COM: The Philadelphia Flyers re-signed forward MIchael Raffl to a three-year deal worth $7.05 million.

WINNIPEG SUN: The Jets placed defenseman Adam Pardy on waivers.

THE DENVER POST: The Colorado Avalanche placed goaltender Reto Berra on waivers.
