Complete list of selections in the 2016 Draft and much more in today’s collections of notable NHL headlines.
NHL.COM: The complete list of selections in the recently-completed 2016 NHL Draft in Buffalo, New York.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Another enjoyable NHL Draft weekend for me. Great to hang out with old friends and meet new ones. My thanks to the city of Buffalo for the fine hospitality.
YAHOO SPORTS: Vancouver Canucks general manager Jim Benning faces tampering charges by the league after publicly expressing interest in Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban and Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos last week.
THE BUFFALO NEWS: Sabres head coach Dan Bylsma wasn’t pleased to hear winger Evander Kane is being investigated for a recent incident at a Chippewa bar.
NBC SPORTS: The Los Angeles Kings re-signed forward Trevor Lewis to a four-year, $8 million contract.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: That’s $2 million per season for Lewis, who’s been a reliable checking-line forward for the Kings. The move leaves them with over $6 million in salary-cap space, enough to perhaps pursue an affordable backup goalie and perhaps a winger via trade or free agency.
CSNNE.COM: Boston Bruins hall of famer Ray Bourque was arrested in Andover and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
The tampering charges asserted by the NHL as per a complaint filed by Bergevin are a joke.I can’t see how its tampering if you aren’t talking to the player’s camp directly your talking to the GM and isn’t that how trades get done. Honest Jim probably should not have been as honest about it but he was not tampering. He was commenting on an already widely reported trade possibility. It may not be good form but he is allowed to comment on who he’s willing to trade for, in this case this does not impact contact talks because there’s not a pending contract being negotiated. I have so often heard GMs say team X is asking way too much for that player blah blah blah so or the NHL to accuse him of tampering is crap now Stamkos maybe a different matter but I don’t think Steve is accusing him of tampering at least not publicly. Unfortunately for GM Benning he will have nobody in his corner to help grieve the upcoming fine and the damage to his reputation is already done.
If it was the other way around, if Bergevin spoke publicly about trade discussions with Benning, about the Sedins, let’s say, what would Benning’s reaction be?
Numerous complaints were filed with the NHL by multiple organizations. No NHL team personal are allowed to comment in anyway about another teams players either under contract or pending UFA’s or RFA’s about their interests in nor can you make public comments about UFA’s until they are contractually obligated to you even after July 1st. This isn’t the 1st time the Canucks have been fined by the NHL for making comments not allowed under the bylaws & constitution of the NHL.
The fact Benning doesn’t have the common sense to know this is disturbing to me. I’m a nobody & I know & as I stated on Friday right after his interview at the draft fines were coming, later announced on Saturday.
Whether we think this is right or wrong isn’t relevant. It’s just the rule, break it & fines are coming. I assume Benning will get 25k+ & the Canucks at least 100K. We’ll never know for certain but the last time the Canucks were fined it was reported at 100K.
Benning’s an idiot, not qualified to be an NHL GM. His management of the Canucks has set them back at least 5 years. In 2 years he’s squandered assets like nothing I’ve ever seen. Just 2 years ago Vancouver had 1 of the best Defenses in the NHL, today it’s 1 of the worst. Bad D’s make for bad teams.
Well said. That’s why you never hire a ex agent to do a GM’s job.
Chill out
2yrs of over exageration.
What have these so called assets performed like?
An overreaction a out not much IMO
The NHL has always been two-faced. In past years – before they introduced the week-long period during which teams could talk to pending UFAs – they used to decree that NO talks could occur UNTIL the day of UFA eligibility. That that was a colossal joke became evident when the announcement came that Chara had signed a massive (for the time) multi-year deal with Boston WITHIN MINUTES of the opening phase.
Don Sweeney if anyone is a lousy GM. 2yrs of incredible poor drafting squaneeing 1sts.
