NHL.COM:  As expected, center Auston Matthews was selected first overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2016 NHL Draft.

Matthews was just one of a record 12 American-born players selected in the opening round.

Three players from Finland – Patrik Laine, Jesse Puljujarvi and Olli Juolevi – were selected in the top five. Laine was selected by the Winnipeg Jets with the second-overall pick, Puljujarvi was picked fourth overall by the Edmonton OIlers, while the Vancouver Canucks selected Juolevi fifth overall.

ARIZONA REPUBLIC: The Arizona Coyotes have identified a site for a new arena in the Phoenix area. They will continue playing at the Gila River Arena in Glendale through the 2018-19 season.
