Montreal Canadiens center Alex Galchenyuk scores in overtime against the Detroit Red Wings.

Game recaps, injury news, signings & more in your NHL morning coffee headlines.

NHL.com: Mitch Marner collected three assists and Auston Matthews scored his ninth goal of the season as the Toronto Maple Leafs doubled up the Washington Capitals 4-2. Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen left the game with a lower-body injury and will be reevaluated on Sunday. Earlier in the day, the Leafs’ organization indefinitely suspended minor-league goalie Garrett Sparks for posting offensive remarks on Facebook.

Alex Galchenyuk’s overtime goal gave the league-leading Montreal Canadiens a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings. Goaltender Carey Price made 32 saves for the Habs, pushing their record to 16-4-2.  The Wings also lost Brendan Smith and Tyler Bertuzzi to injuries and will be evaluated today. Earlier in the day, the Canadiens reported Charles Hudon was sidelined indefinitely with a fractured sternum.

Sidney Crosby’s game-tying goal set the stage for Kris Letang’s shootout winner as the Pittsburgh Penguins edged the New Jersey Devils 4-3. Mike Cammalleri scored twice for the Devils.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Crosby now has a league-leading 15 goals, putting him on pace for 75. The Penguins captain probably won’t reach that total by season’s end, but he could reach 50 goals for only the second time in his career.

Jaromir Jagr netted his 752nd career NHL goal and Aleksander Barkov scored the winner in a shootout as the Florida Panthers nipped the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1.

Jaden Schwartz scored twice and David Perron potted the winner in a shootout to give the St. Louis Blues a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Wild. Earlier in the day, the Wild revealed defenseman Christian Folin will miss 3-4 weeks with a sprained knee

Jeff Carter’s overtime goal lifted the Los Angeles Kings to a 2-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks, who were playing without captain Jonathan Toews for the second straight game. Fortunately, Toews’ upper-body injury isn’t concussion-related.

Ryan Getzlaf tallied a goal and an assists to power the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks.

Goals by Dion Phaneuf and Kyle Turris gave the Ottawa Senators a 2-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Jacob Markstrom made 32 saves backstopping the Vancouver Canucks to a 3-2 shootout victory over the Colorado Avalanche.

ARIZONA SPORTS:  Defenseman Zbynek Michalek is trying to remain positive as his career is winding down in the minors. The Arizona Coyotes demoted Michael earlier this season to their AHL affiliate in Tucson. He’s in the final season of his two-year contract.

YAHOO SPORTS: Former NHL forward Brandon Prust has signed with Germany’s Nurnberg Ice Tigers.

  1. Sparks was sticking up for a disabled person who was getting picked on and is getting punished for it. Basically in a nutshell because Sparks called a loser who was picking on a disabled person, a 13 year old girl for whining about a challenged person receiving help to overcome barriers and said he would like to show up for open hockey drag the guy to centre ice and beat the guy when the exchange got heated. I’m not sure much worse hasn’t been said on the ice and tho not something you want members of your team saying on the internet I have a hard time thinking that it’s suspendable. If anything get him to apologize and explain his action publicly and make him and the organization look better than publishing this half a story.

    • I heard it was a little more than that, from what I was told some homophobic slurs were said

      • Read the article before you slander someone. There were no racial slurs.

      • Or homophobic.

      • My buddy works for the Marlies

      • Good for your buddy

      • Pretty sure he wouldn’t get suspended for sticking up for someone!?

      • According to a TSN report, Sparks took offence to crude comments about a disabled person by users of a Facebook group for goalies and replied to one member: “I want to go to open hockey with you, drag you out to center ice and beat you into a (expletive) pulp until you can’t run that (expletive) little mouth of yours. God, you sound like a 13-year-old girl.” I’m sure TSN and Facebook have it all wrong.

      • Lol cause the media always knows!

      • And every hockey blog has a guy on it who posts stupid crap like he has a “buddy” who knows more… it’s a facebook group if you have a half a brain in your head you could look around you can see it for yourself.

      • Violent and sexist

    • He made some bad choices even if it was for a worthy cause. He should have approached it in a more adult way or better yet he should have just shut the whole thing down.
As a pro athlete you are going to be scrutinized over every move you make, he needs to learn to keep quiet.

      • Good point Yankee fan

      • He is an AHL goalie hardly a spotlight anywhere else but Toronto. I do get a kick out of people who take such offence to “violent and sexist” comments that say they played hockey to such a high level…1 fighting and violence has been around and part of the sport since the dawn of the game and 2 what locker room you ever been in??? lol Not that it makes it right or it should be said but I wonder how much of a story this is if it’s just about any other
AHL goalie. Good on Sparks for sticking up for the kid.

      • I could care less about the whole story or what he said! You brought it up for some reason?

      • If you could careless why are you and your “buddy who works for the Marlies” talking about it? (The voices in your head don’t really count as buddies) and why reply 6 times ifyou could careless? lol I brought it up because it’s one of the stories posted above and you were the one who took it from there.

      • Lol your such a knob you lied about the story and left out a bunch of facts. He brought it up cause he thought it was hilarious ( the guys that read a different story or stat aren’t your buddies either) ?

      • What did I lie about?

      • your buddy who works for the Marlies who told you it was homophobic remarks which it wasn’t thought it was hilarious that the goalie for the team he works for was suspended for something that didn’t happen?
…and I’m making stuff up? Ok

      • Way more than what you were showing shticky quit making stuff up it’s getting old

  2. 15 goals for Crosby and it extrapolates to 75 for the season ? You may want to check your math my friend.

    • He’s scoring at a goal a game pace right now. Playing with Connor Sheary they have developed some really good chemistry and he always played well with Hornqvist. And he’s been playing with Haglen a lot lately too. Those 3 wingers are fearless and always causing turnovers and Crosby has just been cleaning up. He’s really brought his game to another level under Sullivan.

  3. Weber was a beast on the pk last night. Sens played a good game last night they need turris and running to keep scoring and they will push for the playoffs

    • Ryan* not running
