Blue Jackets and Predators interested in Avalanche center Matt Duchene.

Updates on Matt Duchene, Kevin Shattenkirk, Patrick Marleau and more in your NHL rumor mill evening update.

TSN: Darren Dreger reports the Columbus Blue Jackets and Nashville Predators have made trade offers to the Colorado Avalanche for center Matt Duchene. However, the Avs will continue playing the waiting game until their price is met. The Columbus Dispatch’s Aaron Portzline believes defenseman Ryan Murray would be part of the Blue Jackets’ offer.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s believed the Avs seek a good young defenseman, a first-round draft pick and a top prospect as part of the return for Duchene. The 23-year-old Murray has potential but he’s also been hampered by injuries. Predators GM David Poile recently said he wasn’t parting with any of his top-four defensemen. While Colorado GM Joe Sakic may be playing the waiting game, so can his rivals. This could drag on throughout the summer.

FANRAG SPORTS NETWORK: Chris Nichols cites Bob McKenzie telling Montreal’s TSN 690 the New York Rangers could be unwilling to pursue Washington Capitals free-agent defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk. He notes the Rangers recently made some moves to shed salary and give themselves some financial flexibility. They also re-signed blueliner Brendan Smith to a four-year deal. Unless Shattenkirk, a New Rochelle NY native, is willing to give the Rangers a hometown discount, they could be hesitant to invest in an expensive long-term deal for him.

McKenzie’s colleague Pierre LeBrun reports the Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils definitely looked at Shattenkirk. The Tampa Bay Lightning also contacted his representatives, but LeBrun doubts they’ll open the vault for the blueliner.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Sabres’ recent addition of Marco Scandella from the Minnesota Wild could take them out of the Shattenkirk sweepstakes. If the Rangers and Lightning aren’t willing to give him a big payday and if he’s unwilling to come down in price, the Devils could be his only suitable option.

CSN BAY AREA: Kevin Kurz cites TSN’s Darren Dreger saying the San Jose Sharks have offered free-agent forward Patrick Marleau a two-year contract. The long-time Sharks star is reportedly going through his options with his family.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: No word yet on the dollar amount.

FOX SPORTS MIDWEST’s Andy Strickland reports the Philadelphia Flyers have a two-year deal at$2.75 million with Calgary Flames free-agent goaltender Brian Elliott.

SPECTOR’S NOTE:  This hasn’t been officially reported by the Flyers. That won’t happen until after noon ET tomorrow. I’m assuming Strickland meant $2.75 million per season for Elliott. We’ll find out for sure on Saturday.

TRIBLIVE.COM: Jonathan Bombulie reports Pittsburgh Penguins GM Jim Rutherford is close to making a trade that will replace soon-to-depart free-agent center Nick Bonino. Rutherford also said it’s more likely he’ll dip into the free-agent market for a defenseman and a backup goaltender.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: No indication as to which team and player Rutherford is targeting for a trade and what he’s planning on giving up in return.

  1. If the Penguins once thought that the now-departed Oscar Sundqvist would be centering a line for them one day, I wonder if they would consider signing Mikhail Grigorenko. Both are about the same age, weight, and height, and both are rather slow afoot. Both were drafted in 2012, although scouts evidently thought Grigorenko had more ability, his being a first-round choice while Sundqvist was a third rounder. Neither has an impressive NHL record, but many highly rated players who, like Grigorenko, have played for the Sabres and Avalance have disappomted.

    • Jussi would probably be a good fit again.

  2. With Rangers set on left D with Skjei and MacD, they didn’t trade for Deangelo to be a 6th or 7 th D. They fully expect him to be a top 4 Right D and they’re not paying Smith all that money either to be a bottom feeder. He’s going to be a top 4 right D. Signing Shattenkirk is not in the plan.

    • Deangelo top 4?

      Sure why not…

  3. This Duchene things is more than bordering on the very annoying now! Jesus what the Islanders offered was more than fair for what Duchene produces! Sakic the players was great; Sakic the manager not so much! Of course he could possibly be working another angle, and Treliving not needing to relinquish a roster player to get Hamonic might point to something we don’t know either. But so far Joe appears to lack decision making skills.

    • I know. He’s not even worth that much. Being very overrated.

  4. I’m hoping Montreal is bright enough to sign Alzner and go get a centre either trade for Duchesne or go sign someone Hanzel and sign a RW … I’d trade Galleghar, shaw my first and jullson for Duchesne and zadarov … we need RW , C, and the dman Alznar ….
Galchenyuks going to get about 3.5million that leaves 15 million on the table sign 3 players at 5 million each 1Dman 1Centre 1RW
Everyone on that list will make less then 5 million except Radulov so sign him , Alznar, Go get Hanzel or Gagner

    Here’s the guys I’d target
    RW. A.Radulov
    C. M.Hanzel
    C. S.Gagner
    C. B.Boyle
    RW. R.Vrbata
    RW. N.Yakupov
    RW. J.Iginla

    • I don’t understand this Radulov situation. Who in their right mind would pay 5+ million over 5+ years to a 31 year old 18 goal scorer. Not to mention if I’m not mistaken his first full NHL season? He’s a second line winger at BEST and that’s pushing it.

      • True Howse, but his playoff performance against the Rangers was impressive. His possession numbers are good and he’s huge. But 5,000,000 for 5+ years is steep.

    • A Duchene deal needs a top reasonably aged proven defensemen as a centre piece. Montreal just simply has none. Juulsen is a good prospect but doesn’t cut it

    • Agreed on the Alzner front. Not sure about the rest.

  5. Rutherford should go after Brian Boyle for third line centre, 2 years at 1.8 million to play with the champs!!

    • Too late he is gone… not a bad idea he got more though.. in new jersey
