Winnipeg Jets captain Blake Wheeler believes his club can reach the playoffs in 2018.

Check out the latest in your NHL morning coffee headlines.

WINNIPEG SUN: Jets captain Blake Wheeler believes his team has the talent this season to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2015. “It’s got to be this year, it just has to be,” said Wheeler. “A part of that is getting better goaltending and a part of that is playing better in front of our goalies, allowing them to maybe not see as many odd-man rushes or the breakdowns that we have sometimes.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Since relocating from Atlanta in 2011, the Jets have only reached the playoffs once. They have playoff caliber offense but the same cannot be said of their goaltending and defensive play.

During this summer, management brought in goaltender Steve Mason and defenseman, defenseman Dmitry Kulikov and checking-line center Matt Hendricks. If the Jets fail to reach the playoffs this season, big changes could be in store in the front office and behind the bench. A roster shakeup could also be in store.

LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL: The Vegas Golden Knights have announced the player jersey numbers for their inaugural season.

NBC SPORTS: The NHL and NHLPA teamed up to raise $200,000 for Hurricane Harvey flood relief.

BOSTON GLOBE: Single-game Bruins tickets for 2017-18 go on sale on September 7.

STLTODAY.COM: The St. Louis County Council approved a resolution for a delay on the construction of a new practice facility for the Blues over land grading begun without federal approval.

TWINCITIES.COM: The Minnesota Wild are in need of a new anthem singer. James Bohn, who sung the anthem at Wild games since 2010-11 has stepped down from his role.

  1. The Minnesota Wild, seeking a replacement for resigned anthem singer James Bohn, have offered the position to Sean Connery. Said Sean, “I don’t think I can hit the high notes, but I’ll never say never again.”

    • 1983 called, they want their joke back…;)

      • I just heard that Sean’s audition was a bust. The old guy couldn’t sing louder than 007 decibels. Now, 1983 wants nothing to do with the joke.

  2. There is no doubt the Jets have the talent; the question is, do the have the coach to get the job done.

    • Jets need to make the playoffs this year. The fans have been patient but another missed year will cause it to thin. Winnipeg has a loyal core but it’s not a huge market so if the jets want to expand their fan base then the mandate has to include playoffs.saw them against the panthers last season and they looked good that night.
