Can the Detroit Red Wings find sufficient salary-cap room to bring back forward Thomas Vanek?

Latest on the Detroit Red Wings and Arizona Coyotes plus an update on Will Butcher in your NHL rumor mill.

FANRAG SPORTS NETWORK: Chris Nichols cites TSN’s Darren Dreger’s Friday appearance on WGR 550 discussing the lingering questions facing the Detroit Red Wings.

Despite the Wings lack of salary-cap space, Dreger wonders if general manager Ken Holland can find a way to add an unrestricted free agent, such as former Wings forward Thomas Vanek. He feels the Wings still have legitimate interest in Vanek, who netted 17 goals last season with Detroit and the Florida Panthers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Earlier this summer, there were reports claiming the Vanek camp had been in touch with Wings management. While I don’t doubt there’s mutual interest, the Red Wing are above the $75 million salary cap by just over $3 million and still have restricted free agent forward Andreas Athanasiou to re-sign.

They’ll get $3.9 million in cap relief at the start of the season when inactive winger Johan Franzen is once again placed on long-term injured reserve. However, that won’t free up sufficient room to re-sign Athanasiou and bring back Vanek.

Holland recently said he’ll address this issue during preseason. He can demote a couple of players to squeeze out sufficient cap space for Athanasiou but it could take a salary-dumping trade to find enough room to also add Vanek.

ARIZONA SPORTS: Craig Morgan wonders what the Arizona Coyotes plan will be to address their lack of depth at right wing. He notes they currently have ” Anthony Duclair, Tobias Rieder, Christian Fischer and maybe Nick Cousins, a left-wing transplant or even Emerson Etem” to fill those positions. Morgan notes GM John Chayka sounded like he wanted to make one more move to reshape his roster but it has yet to happen.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Chayka could go the UFA route, where ageing wingers such as Jaromir Jagr, Thomas Vanek, Jarome Iginla, Brian Gionta and P-A Parenteau remain available. He’s obviously not bringing back long-time Coyotes captain Shane Doan.

With over $19 million in salary cap space, Chayka could get bold and maybe pitch an expensive offer sheet to a restricted free agent, such as Boston’s David Pastrnak or Columbus’ Josh Anderson. However, I don’t think he intends to employ that rarely-used tactic.

TVA SPORTS: The Montreal Canadiens are not in the running to sign unrestricted free agent college defenseman Will Butcher.

  1. “The Montreal Canadiens are not in the running to sign unrestricted free agent college defenseman Will Butcher.”

Hardly surprising as everyone knows – including Butcher I’m sure – that Claude Julien has little patience for rookie mistakes.

    • The Canadiens will however be in the running for a lottery spot.

      • As Jean Chretien might say “probabably” – unless Price can stand on his head for 50 games. Wonder what the Vegas odds would be on that?

      • I sometimes wonder if that is not intentional by Marc Bergevin. Setting up the team purposely tank in order to take a run at exceptional status wunderkind, Joe Veleno at the 2018 entry draft

      • Who knows, it worked for the Leafs who deliberately fielded the weakest team possible for a shot at Matthews

      • It’s just plain dumb to think that the Habs are not gonna be in the playoffs this yr, they are better than the leafs,Bruins, sens, panthers, sabres and if the lightning defense hasn’t improved like last yr as good or better. Don’t forget the lightning didn’t make the playoffs last yr

  2. Ya think FYI no Canadian team is in the market for Will Butcher, It’s pretty much down to the Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils,Vegas Golden Knights and slim chance for the Pittsburgh Penguins that’s about it.

    • Rude

      • So speaking the truth is making me rude, I’ll accept that.

      • rude.

    • Yesterday, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post wrote an article that showed a picture of Will Butcher at the airport sporting a Buffalo Sabre’s tote bag slung over his shoulder.

      Maybe it means sumpthin’.

      Maybe not?

  3. If Phoenix has a decent third line center Pitt has extra rw depth. Make it happen! Please! Anything to keep from icing a line containing mclement and reaves!

    • Reaves isn’t going anywhere and you’ll like it.

      • I miss Botterill already 🙁

a fourth line of kunitz cullen and rust to mcclement reaves and kunhackel?

  4. Holland is looking to solidify his defense and fix his cap space, not add an aging forward. I have been of the opinion that Holland has earned the right to have some time to turn the red wings around, but if he signs Vanek it’s time for a new GM.

    • If AA goes to the KHL this year, We might not have a choice but to sign Vanek we still need to replace AA’s scoring and Vanek should do that quite well. Especially for a team that was 26th in scoring last season.

  5. Lyle one of your ads this morning off this article was a redirect to those fake virus warnings. It kept me at their page and had to force close the browser. Might want to let the ad company know.

  6. Why so much coverage on the Red Wings? Boring. There are 30 other teams.

  7. I don’t see Arz bringing in a RW. Here’s what I think may happen, move wingers around as you wish.

    Domi, Stepan, Keller.
    Perlini, Dvorak, Duclair.
    Martinook, Strome, Reider.
    Crouse, Cousins, Richardson.
    Spare. McGinn.

I assume RW Fisher will be the 1st injry replacement.

Richardson could play C, bumping Cousins to RW on the 4thg line. Dvorak looked very good with Domi over the final 3rd of the season & that pairing may stay intact.

Regardless Arz’s roster looks set to me, tons of prospects available to fill injuries as they happen.

    • Striker mcginn is as a spare? You must not watch the yotes very much he will fit in over 5 of those players you listed! I thought you reall y followed hockey?

  8. Detroit let some youth play . I think it is the only way you can win is with some good young and entry level contracts . Guys like Bertuzzi and Evgeny Svechnikov need to play. AA over Vanek absolutely. A good starting core with Larkin and Mantha . Too much money in net.Do not care who is better or even who they are. Too much money in net.
