Could Shane Doan be a good fit with the St. Louis Blues?

Updates on the Blues, Bruins and Blackhawks in your NHL rumor mill.

STLTODAY.COM: In a recent live chat with Blues fans, Jeremy Rutherford said he’d be surprised if the club traded veteran forward Alexander Steen. He cites the club need to surround their young players with veteran talent. If Steen struggles this season, perhaps this topic can be revisited.

Rutherford also thinks it could be worthwhile for the Blues to consider adding unrestricted free agent Shane Doan, citing their need for depth at right wing and his leadership.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Steen, 33, is starting the first season of a four-year, $23 million contract. He also has a full no-trade clause. He’s not going anywhere.

As for Doan, they could use him in a third- or fourth-line role. Rutherford doesn’t think it would be a hard sell for Blues management to bring him in. It remains to be seen, however, if Doan’s on their radar.

CSNNE.COM: Joe Haggerty recently weighed in on the status of contract talks between the Boston Bruins and restricted free agent forward David Pastrnak. He notes there’s still plenty of time for the two sides to get a deal done before training camp opens in September. Pastrnak also doesn’t appear to be distressed by the situation.

Haggerty believes there’s little chance of a rival club signing the winger to a unmatchable offer sheet, pointing out the Bruins have roughly $10 million in salary cap space. He also cites sources saying the two sides are working on a deal worth around six years and $36-million contract.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Nothing earth shattering here, though it’s notable that we now have some idea of what Pastrnak’s new contract with the Bruins could look like. While there’s been some talk this summer of clubs considering the offer-sheet gambit for RFA talent such as Pastrnak, it doesn’t appear as though that will happen.

THE ATHLETIC: Scott Powers recently reported the Chicago Blackhawks are expected to pursue 2017 Hobey Baker Award winner Will Butcher when the defenseman becomes eligible for unrestricted free agency on Aug. 15. Butcher, 22, is expected to have several suitors. The Detroit Red Wings could be among them.

  1. No Duschene not going anywhere update today?

    Disappointing, lol.

    • Who is Duschene?

    • I kind of figured if it hasn’t happened by now they will start the season with Matt on the roster…feel bad for the guy

  2. Chicago seems like the ideal place for Butcher. Solid veteran defensemen to mentor him and a team that doesn’t need him to be any more than average during his transition to the NHL.

    • I have said this before butcher is no more than a C prospect that will need 2 to 3 years in the minors even before making a bottom pairing in the NHL. If he even makes it to the NHL. Again I will reference the hockey news prospect edition. They don’t they do not have him even in the top 100 prospects outside the NHL. As opposed they had Jimmy Vesey as a top 15 Prospect in his free-agent year.
Expectations for Butcher by some of the posters are out of line with reality.

    • Pittsburgh – Chicago… he can be mentored in Wilkes Barrie and the Pens have really developed the college players well Rust, Guentzal, Sheary, Wilson…Sergi Gonchar can bring him along

  3. Doan to STL? Not as crazy as Gretzky to STL many years ago, I suppose…

    • I think it’s time for Shayne Doan to face facts. He’s had a good career but his skills are gone. Please retire .

  4. BUTCHER will be a very good player at CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS
