Latest on the Leafs, an update on Boone Jenner, Jared Boll retires and more in your NHL morning coffee headlines.

SPORTSNET: Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas doesn’t believe his club’s recent signing of John Tavares will affect efforts to re-sign young stars Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander.

Asked if the Leafs can afford to keep all four during a recent interview with Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek, Dubas replied, “We can, and we will.” Nylander is a restricted free agent, while Matthews and Marner are both entering the final season of their entry-level contracts.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: As per Cap Friendly, the Leafs have just over $16 million in projected salary-cap space for 2018-19.

That’s more than enough to re-sign Nylander for perhaps between $5 – $6 million annually and leave enough to fill their remaining five roster spots, including perhaps a top-four defenseman via trade. Depending on how much they invest in contracts that stretch beyond 2019-20, they’ll have enough to re-sign Matthews and Marner.

However, as I pointed out in a recent Featurd.io article, the cost of re-signing them might leave limited cap space next summer to replace or re-sign unrestricted free agent defensemen Ron Hainsey and Jake Gardiner, or to address any roster weaknesses that should crop up over the next year.

THE ATHLETIC’s Aaron Portzline reports the Columbus Blue Jackets are closing in on a new four-year contract for restricted free agent forward Boone Jenner.

Portzline also profiles former Blue Jackets enforcer Jared Boll, who announced his retirement following 11 NHL seasons.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Boll spent nine of those seasons with the Blue Jackets, followed by two with the Anaheim Ducks. In 579 NHL games, he scored 28 goals, 66 points and amassed 1,298 PIMs.

NBC SPORTS: Former NHL players Nathan Oystrick is the new head coach of the Humboldt Broncos. He takes over the role formerly filled by the late Darcy Haugan, who died in a bus crash in April that killed 16 people and injured 13.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Osytrick spent three seasons in the NHL with the Atlanta Thrashers, Anaheim Ducks and St. Louis Blues.

  1. Congrats Nathan

Thoughts and prayers to Humboldt Strong lost and best wishes on moving forward with this new endeavour. Not only is the whole of Humboldt behind you, all of Canada, all of the hockey world is behind you and the entire Broncos

  2. KD

Please do not sign 8 year extensions now on any of the three. Bridge, then 8— that way you are guaranteed them for 14 years and not 11 (walk after 8 more— just like JT did ).

Power all with you right now.

    • not if they get offersheeted. Mathews accept a bridge? doubt it

  3. I’m still at a complete loss to figure out why TO would sign JT! They have Matthews, their #1 Center to build the future around and have been touting him as the greatest thing since sliced bread. Then they have a rift form between him and their other bighead, the coach, so to fix it they go and sign JT to be what? Their #1 Center. How is this playing out in Matthew’s head right now? I can’t see him being okay with these changes!

It may have worked for Pittsburgh, but these Leafs are not the Pens!

    • Take a chillpill Mathews is still the number one centre on Team and will sign if he wants to stay, only he has controll of thos

    • JT will be the #2 center man

    • He had contact with Mathews and Mathews wanted him to come to leafs cause winning is what he wants most so apparently he is happy to see J.T come here

      • Matthews was the Top Dog in TO, I’m not sure he’d be ok with this change. He wasn’t impressed in the playoffs sitting on the bench watching Kadri take those late game defensive zone faceoffs, nor was he happy to see Bozak on the top powerplay unit when they were losing …

So when do the Matthews to Phoenix chants start?
