Sunday NHL Rumor Roundup – February 3, 2019

by | Feb 3, 2019 | Rumors | 83 comments

Latest on Auston Matthews, Taylor Hall, Artemi Panarin, Derick Brassard, Brent Seabrook and more in the Sunday NHL rumor roundup.

SPORTSNET: Elliotte Friedman reports the Toronto Maple Leafs will meet with Auston Matthews’ representatives regarding a contract extension for the 21-year-old center, who’s slated to become a restricted free agent this summer. While he’s eligible to receive an eight-year extension, that would be too expensive and force the breakup of the roster. Instead, they’re focusing on a five- or six-year deal.

Chris Johnston speculates it could be worth in the range of $11 million while a six-year one creeps closer to $12 million. A five-year contract also buys one of Matthew’s unrestricted free agent years while a six-year one buys two UFA years. Once the Matthews deal is settled, Nick Kypreos said the Leafs will shift their attention to Mitch Marner, who’s also due to become an RFA this summer.

Luke Fox reports Matthews is fine with whatever agreement the two sides reach. “There’s no secret there’s a cap. So, try to find something that works for both sides and obviously helps us out with that whole situation. I’ll leave it to them and just continue to play hockey, and once it’s done, it’s done. That’ll be it,” said Matthews.

TORONTO SUN: Steve Simmons believes a simple way for the Leafs to avoid Matthews and Marner receiving offer sheets this summer is to re-sign them before July 1…He also said he’s told the Leafs wouldn’t trade Kasperi Kapanen or Andreas Johnsson for Chicago Blackhawks veteran defenseman Duncan Keith…Simmons said the Leafs will attempt to include blueliner Nikita Zaitsev in every trade talk they have leading up to the trade deadline. He doesn’t believe they should move prospect defenseman Rasmus Sandin but said they’re getting some action on Timothy Liljegren, who looks like a future NHL defenseman, though not a star.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s going to cost a lot of money to re-sign Matthews. The Leafs are simply trying to make it as affordable as possible to free up an extra million or two to put toward other signings this summer. Sounds like something between $11-$12 million annually. Matthews doesn’t appear too concerned over how much he’ll get and for how long. Some thought he’d push for Connor McDavid money ($12.5 million) or more. This will push him close to McDavid.

Trading for Keith would be a great idea if he weren’t 35, signed through 2022-23, and if the Leafs weren’t faced with investing over $20 million on Matthews and Marner this summer. Good luck moving Zaitsev and his $4.5-million annual average value through 2023-24.

SPORTSNET: Elliotte Friedman reports some teams decided to take stock of players with expiring contracts after it emerged the Columbus Blue Jackets wouldn’t be able to re-sign winger Artemi Panarin during this season. He said there were rumblings the New Jersey Devils might try to move Taylor Hall now as opposed to doing so this summer but Devils general manager Ray Shero said there’s “zero chance” he trades Hall before the trade deadline. Hall is slated to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2020.

TSN: Frank Seravalli reports there’s increased interest in Devils forward Brian Boyle but the 34-year-old prefers staying put. He has an eight-team no-trade list.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I think the Devils are prepared to make Hall the highest-paid player in franchise history this summer. But if they feel he’s hesitant about re-signing, they could try shopping him in the offseason rather than suffer the same fate as the Blue Jackets with Panarin. I can also see them re-signing Boyle to an affordable deal.

SPORTSNET: Nick Kypreos believes center Derick Brassard shouldn’t get too comfortable with the Florida Panthers after being dealt by the Pittsburgh Penguins. There’s a feeling he could be moved and there’s speculation the Columbus Blue Jackets might be interested.

Kypreos wonders if that might involve “a bigger picture” with Artemi Panarin and Sergei Bobrovsky but Elliotte Friedman feels that’s speculation and pursuing those guys would be free-agent moves. He adds there’s a ton of interest in Panarin but teams that are interested don’t expect they’ll be allowed to discuss a contract extension with him.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Brassard bundled in a package deal (with at least a good young forward and a first-round pick) for Panarin would certainly be a bold move by the Panthers, but why part with assets for a guy you could sign this summer via free agency? Yes, I know, it would give them time to hammer out an agreement on a new contract, but there’s still the risk he could test the market. You’ve also got to figure the Blue Jackets would want a good young forward as part of the return, too. If Brassard returns to Columbus, it’ll likely be for a draft pick.

SPORTSNET: Elliotte Friedman reports Chicago Blackhawks management has approached defenseman Brent Seabrook about waiving his no-trade clause. Seabrook has said no to that request but the club will still test the trade market to see if there’s interest in the veteran blueliner.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Hands up everyone who wants to take on a fading 33-year-old defenseman signed through 2023-24 with an annual salary-cap hit of $6.875 million? Anyone? Anyone?

NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks believes the Rangers should avoid a scenario in which they swap pending UFA center Kevin Hayes for Columbus’ pending UFA winger Artemi Panarin. He feels Hayes will likely be moved by the trade deadline for a stockpile of future assets and not someone who could depart via free agency in July. Brooks speculates the Florida Panthers are the one non-contender with a vested interest in obtaining Panarin and using the remainder of the season to woo him into signing a contract extension.

Brooks also reports the Pittsburgh Penguins have been monitoring Rangers winger Mats Zuccarello, though they’re not overflowing with prospects to exchange for a rental player. He wonders if the Blueshirts might trade Hayes and Zuccarello before the trade deadline and perhaps attempt to bring them back this summer as free agents.

Brooks recently wondered if there might be a market for Rangers blueliner Marc Staal. While teams aren’t beating down the door to inquire about “a rather immobile 32-year-old defenseman” with two full seasons at $5.7 million per season but noted some serious contenders are always in the market for blueline depth. Staal would have to waive his no-trade clause.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I don’t see a Hayes-for-Panarin swap going down. If, as expected, Hayes gets traded it’ll be for young assets that could help the Rangers within the next couple of years. The Penguins could dangle young goalie Tristan Jarry for Zuccarello but I don’t think that’s going to happen. It’s possible Penguins GM Jim Rutherford is done dealing but he could still have once more trick up his sleeve. I also don’t see a market for Staal.

WINNIPEG SUN: Ken Wiebe reports Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff is expected to be a buyer at the trade deadline and will likely target a forward. While a center remains a priority, a high-end winger like Ottawa’s Mark Stone (provided he’s available) could also prove tempting. With their window of opportunity now at its widest before the inevitable salary-cap crunch, Cheveldayoff could look long and hard at his options. Wiebe expects Cheveldayoff will be careful with cost and won’t mortgage the future, though the Jets’ first-round pick in this year’s draft could be in play.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: The Jets are actively shopping little-used Nic Petan but are rejecting offers for young forward Jack Roslovic.

SPORTSNET: Nick Kypreos said Hayes is still linked to the Winnipeg Jets

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Hayes could be a more realistic option for the Jets than Stone or Matt Duchene, as the Senators will set a high price for either guy. With a growing number of quality players potentially available leading up to the deadline, Cheveldayoff should be able to find a suitable trade target that’s within his price range, especially if he’s willing to part with his first-round pick.

SPORTSNET: Nick Kypreos reports it’s become a buyer’s market, with the sellers seeking first-round picks. The Los Angeles Kings seek a first-round pick for Tyler Toffoli, as do the Ottawa Senators for Ryan Dzingel, and the Carolina Hurricanes for Micheal Ferland. Kypreos believes the Winnipeg Jets, Calgary Flames, and Nashville Predators have their first-rounders in play.

SPORTSNET: Nick Kypreos speculates the Nashville Predators could be in the market for one or two forwards with Auston Watson now suspended indefinitely as he receives treatment under the league’s substance abuse program.

NICHOLS ON HOCKEY: TSN’s Darren Dreger appeared on Buffalo’s WGR 550 on Friday and was asked if the Boston Bruins will do anything before the trade deadline. Dreger believes they will try to add a center or a right wing. He suggested Ottawa’s Matt Duchene (if he’s available) or Ryan Dzingel or Los Angeles’ Tyler Toffoli as possible options.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: They’ve also been linked to Philadelphia’s Wayne Simmonds and Carolina’s Micheal Ferland.

SPORTSNET: Nick Kypreos reports Detroit Red Wings veteran defenseman Niklas Kronwall has informed the team he has no interest in being traded. He has a limited no-trade clause but it’s believed GM Ken Holland will respect Kronwall’s wishes unless he gets an offer too good to refuse and could then take it to Kronwall. Kypreos said there’s also talk of a possible contract extension.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I think Kronwall will still be a Red Wing after 3 PM ET on Feb. 25.

  1. I could see Edmonton saying yes to Seabrook if Chicago takes back Lucic

    • Which resolves nothing for either club.

      • Very true but one would have to think that Seabrook would be just a little more useful than Lucic has been…but ya why even bother.

      • True enough but one would think that Seabrook would help the team a little more at his position rather than what Lucic has brought to the forwards.

Even still like you said why bother.

      • I would like to think that Seabrook would help more than Lucic has but ya why even bother.

      • True enough Lyle. Ultimately I see Lucic to the Habs in a deal similar to the Armia one where they end up with a piece like Puljujarvi.

  2. Lyle
Why did Panarin wait so long to come to the NHL?
He was good enough a few years before he made the jump if I remember correctly. Could he carry a higher risk of returning to Russia mid-contract?

    • Panarin didn’t wait, he was passed over in the 2010 NHL Draft and signed with the KHL. Five years later, after lighting it up in the KHL, the Blackhawks signed him as a free agent. I don’t see him running back to Russia mid-contract. He seems to enjoy playing in the NHL.

      • Gotcha

  3. Boston is starting to slip out of the playoffs. At this point should just wait till the deadline and see if they are a contender or not. Stupid to trade a first or quality prospects for a rental if they don’t make the playoffs.

    • That’s what makes Toffoli a great target for Boston, he’s signed up for another year at a very reasonable cap hit.

Boston is a one line team and could definitely use a former 30 goal scorer to help balance out their top six.

    • Dave I still believe they are a playoff team, but rely on strong defense, PP and one line. I don’t see them getting blown out of any games because of their defense structure that Cassidy wants them to tighten up.
Boston 3rd and 4th line don’t concern me as much as the lack of second line scoring.
But i’m with you, not sure what we have yet. Kassidy is trying to beef up the size by putting Trent Frederick 6’2″ 203lbs and Peter Cehlarik 6’2″ 202lbs into the lineup he likes their compete.
Maybe Frederick is being showcase for a potential move St.L for Schenn?
Sticking to my previous wants which I feel would move the needle quite a bit for Boston. Acquiring; Stone and Schenn the cost for Stone might be to high if he doesn’t resign before the trade deadline.

  4. Zuccarello for Jarry? Why? Ny has Lundqvist under contract for 2 more years. Georgiev who’s cost controlled for another year…. and one of highest ranked prospect goalies in the world on his way soon.

I don’t see Jarry as a guy NY is seeking. Zuccarello has been playing well. I think there is a better deal out there than Jarry.

    • Last thing the Blueshirts need is another goalie in the system … which means it will probably happen.

      • Jack J would be the worse return….

      • ds

Please tell me what extra you need in a deal to have them accept JJ …. I’m begging for a deal 🙂

      • Because they’ve been known to overstock on goalies over the years? Lmao. Smh!

Jarry has become a bit of a castaway since Desmith and Miller are both under contract. So wouldn’t it be Pittsburgh that’s overstocked on goalies?

      • Murray not miller

      • @pengy
take back Brendan Smith in the deal…

      • Ds, I’ll take Smith buried in Hartford for 2 more years than JJ for 4! No thanks!

      • ds

        NY4Life is absolutely right

        JJ is a nightmare

        Smith …. bad
JJ … cataclysmically bad …. AND for 4 more years …. AND at $3.25M ; AND somehow is being played EVERY game AND on special teams AND coach and GM are blind to his deeply costly play …. at the expense of the entire team, fans , and crimping the development of a great prospect in Petterson

… so a flip of Smith for JJ not happening

GMJR can’t even do the absolute simplest thing to improve team and free up cap space…. by waiving Ruhweedel …. so no way he is moving JJ

      • no space anyway. who could the pens send to ny along with a prospect and/or pick? Rust? pens dont have a ton of prospects to kick in and know have very little picks left… I can’t see it.

      • Ed van impe
…jarry might be a nice add for lundqvist when hes done jarry can play..good goalie

      • Lundqvist has a replacement. Shestyorkin…. and no, Jarry is not a good add or good fit. I’d imagine if he was, Desmith would not have an extension and Jarry would be the guy.

Jarry is not even to be mentioned on the same planet as Shestyorkin, nevermind Lundqvist.

      • Jarry… 3.50 gaa .887 sv%

Georgiev 3.28 gaa .897 sv%….in 15 games…. I’ll stick with Georgiev and take picks and prospects that actually fit NYs needs going forward. Rather than Jarry who’s no different than Georgiev.

    • Pittsburghpenguins Dont need zuccarello he is not gaving a good year and his cap hit is too thanks

      • He’s not having a good year and not worth and his cap hit is too high?

Today, he’d be 6th in scoring in Pittsburgh. Above Rust and Hornqvist. He has 13 points in his last 7 games….. wasn’t Rust on fire after a hat trick 30 games deep with about 4 points on the year?

      • 28 points in 37 games…. it’s no hat trick in one game….. but now that he’s healthy 13 points in his last 7….. and 28 in 37 at 4.50 full aav is expensive?

Yet Hornqvist at 5.30 with 5 years remaining on his deal and 26 points to his name is amazing? Bjugstad with 5 goals at 4.1…..Rust 3.5 with 26 points playing alongside Crosby are steals ? Oh boy….

Black and yellow black and yellow black and yellow! Lmao

  5. Montreal could take on Seabrooks contract, but what other goodies would Chicago be willing to give

    • Alzner to CHI for Seabrook and a 2nd?

is that something for both sides?

MTL gets another pick to build with
CHI gets cap relief and a NHL body.

  6. I rarely post sarcasm …. in print it can come off more on the side of being a dick rather than humorous

    However ….. I can’t resist this one w.r.t. :

“Steve Simmons believes a simple way for the Leafs to avoid Matthews and Marner receiving offer sheets this summer is to re-sign them before July 1”

    …..Thanks Captain Obvious

OK …. my sarcasm switch now turned off

    Just had to do it

Re: AM …. I posted before I wouldn’t be surprised at $55 M for 5 or $70 M for 6 …. both heavy on signing bonus (SB) and loaded at the front end

If they can sign him soon for 5 years for $56 M ( to make him highest AAV Leaf) …$15M in SB in each of first 3 years (similar but slightly more than JT) ; $3M SB in each of last 2 years and $1M in Sal each year…. that fair contract IMO could induce MM’s camp to save face (publicly stating not sign in-season) and come to a 5 year deal between season end and 1/7

    Marner’s deal could be $48 M for 5 years ….. $1M in Sal each year …. with SB : $15M; $12M ; $10 M; $3M; $3M

    Combined Cap of $20.8M

Including Horton’s Cap and Phil’s retained $’s and an $83M Cap …. that leaves just a hair less than $2M to sign 8 spots

Ridding Horton’s contract (if possible and if so; it will cost assets)…. Leafs would still be basically filling all 8 spots at/around League min ….

They could sign 1 player at around $2.6-$2.7M with all of the other 7 at exactly league min. Or 2 players at around $1.6M – $1.7M with ALL of the remaining 6 at league min.

…. and that is using every single penny of the estimated $83M Cap

can’t field a team like that ….. so no matter what …. players will be exiting

Zaitz prime to send packing ….. going to cost assets in the trade for someone to take him or an equally brutal contract coming back

It all comes down to WW and Marleau

At least one has to move for Leafs to field a full team next year with cup worthy credentials

One of them has full control and the other has heard his GM publicly claim that his plans are to keep him long term

GMKD has a tough few months ahead

I would not hesitate one second on moving WW … his return can and IMO would, bring back a top 4D at less than his cap …. receiving team (after 1/7) only has to pay him $700K next year and a total cash outlay of <$5M per year….. cap hit $7M

I tried to go through all the quotes I could find from GMKD wrt to WW …. I couldn't find (asking here if others have) anywhere where he actually said he promised WW permanency … he could have done this privately but publicly I found that he has repeated that "our plans are …. long term"

Well plans change (and have to)

Again no idea of what he personally said to WW or if I've missed a public statement where GMKD has PROMISED WW long term …. that if happened; unfortunately is not as important as the over-all team success

GMKD's job is the betterment of the team and not his personal promises and/or his having egg on his face

He must free up cap space and make moves …. IMO WW has to go

    Re : Marleau

I posted before a question wrt who gets hit with the cap if he is traded and then retires…. mixed responses …. also searched for information via net….. also mixed …. a little more skewed to the answer that if traded while in last year of his 35+ contract (so after 1/7 when SB paid) the receiving team gets full cap hit regardless if he retires

Does anybody here know definitively on this?

I would think that is the case (receiving team hit) as TSN & SN & other media have repeatedly talked about Leafs possibly moving Marleau in July to save on Cap. They wouldn't suggest this if Leafs were definitely on the hook for his Cap no matter what….

….if he is traded … it would be to a non contender with cap space looking for assets in return…. with the knowledge that he (Marleau) would almost assuredly retire then (40, on a non-contender, for only $1.25M; with another family move or being away from fam)… receiving team ends up paying no $'s and uses only cap space they don't need just to get free assets …. Pavel Datsyuk type of move

The point is moot if Leafs can't convince Marleau to waive his rights

    Good luck GMKD

    Go Leafs Go

    • “Matthews is fine with whatever agreement the two sides reach. “There’s no secret there’s a cap. So, try to find something that works for both sides and obviously helps us out with that whole situation. I’ll leave it to them and just continue to play hockey, and once it’s done, it’s done. That’ll be it,” said Matthews.”

Seems clear to me Pengy that Matthews will sign a somewhat team friendly deal and before the trade deadline as well is my call.

      • Hi Gary

Yeah that is what I was proposing ….. just a smidge over $11M AAV … can’t possibly see him signing less than $10.5M AAV and it won’t get to $12M

Leafs have tons of cash; little cap …. so signing bonuses are completely irrelevant in their decision process …. they will load both AM’s and MM’s contracts with SBs

BTW …. last night’s game is the one I look forward to all season …. as a Pens and Leafs fan …. the outcome to me is irrelevant …. best would have been an OT game. When the two play I tend lean my cheers in that game to the team lower in the standings

Prior to the game they were 1 point apart, both 2nd in their div …. an OT win by Pens would have put then equal in points

…. wore Pens jersey in 1st/3rd and Leafs in 2nd

      • um, sure he will. he still will get market. 12 mill 5 or 6 years. marner 9.5.

    • Pengy you think a team is going to give up a top 4 dman for Nylander based on his previous 2 season. I don’t think that is going to happen because so far this season he has a whopping 1g 6a for 7pts in 23 games.
I understand he started the season late, behind everyone else, catching up. He should be caught up by now. Concern teams will need to see an improvement in stats and not well he’s only 22 and done it before.

      • Hi Caper

Fully concur if there is no improvement by year end

I’m not saying he will be clipping at the rate he was at last year , in the next 2 months; but I do see him dramatically improving on his current pace

Other GMs ; if they do see my subjectively envisioned upswing in production …. should be willing to take on that lower risk contract …. after SB paid …, cash out is only $700 K for 19/20

He has produced in past …. this would be a low risk contract with potentially a high return

I don’t think any GM feels that his entire future will be at this current rate

$700 K is basically league min … even his current production slump is in line with that …. just a change of scenery (and pressure off his back) should give an up-tick and possibly a big up-tick

Reasonably other GMs should see his production on their team as somewhere between what he’s producing now and his rate of the last 2 years; some will have a much higher prediction in mind (closer to last year’s clip OR possibly even better??? Who knows for sure)

If a team receives him in July for League Min …. and somehow absolutely nothing improves (to me extremely slim chance) ; they can always trade him the next year

Low possibility of High potential upside; medium possibility of fair production; very low possibility of current priduction for all of 19/20; with limited risk (can always re-trade) …. IMO…. can be enough to induce a team looking for scoring; on a lower internal budget; and with cap space; to offer up a mid 20’s D that can fit in to Leafs top 4

I’m not talking about top 2D

The return D in the trade only has to be better than Zaitz, or Ozh (Gardner is gone) …. that’s not much …. so WW for a mid 20’s D (preferably RHD) better than Zaitz or Ozh (and at less Cap than $7M); is not asking too much

I just think that Leafs are moving in the right direction and if they can focus off season trades/acquisitions on solidifying their top 4D…. then they have a much better than average shot at a SC (or 2?) over a 1/2 decade starting in June ’20.

They have scoring covered … WW not needed long term; can’t be moved this season ; can easily be moved on July 2nd

    • Nobody is taking on Hortons deal. That’s money out of pocket. No small market is taking on that dead weight. And no marker that could afford it has the room or would be willing.

You’re that split between the Pens and Leafs that you don’t care who wins? I’m a Ranger fan / Tampa fan. But when they play each other I’m not switching jerseys . Aside from this year when I’m wanting NY to bottom out.

      • NYR4Life

Yep… if one of them was markedly lower in the standings I’d be cheering for a regulation win by them and wearing that jersey all game

I love all hockey games …. watched pieces of many of the other games last night as well …. it’s great entertainment

If Pens meet Leafs in playoffs ; of course I’d be cheering for Leafs as they are 52 years removed from a SC but Pens are only coming up 2 years removed from one

In all honestly and taking off my biased cheers …. I don’t think either team has a realistic shot at SC this year; and as I think TBay is not only the fav in the East but the fav to win SC …, both teams would have to get by the fav to reach SC…. as at current standings … Leafs would meet them in 2nd round and Pens would have to wait (if successful) until 3rd round …. so my basic logic had Pens advancing further in playoffs this year than Leafs

Anything can happen in the playoffs …. and I expect many changes will happen throughout the league in next three weeks …, all setting up great entertainment

      • NY4Life

Shoot, sorry , I forgot to respond wrt to the Horton contract

Your right in that it is EXTREMELY unlikely that some team would be willing to take it on

Very remote chance …. but maybe

Flipping him at 50% retained (can they do that while he’s in LTIR? Not sure) will at least free up $2.65M in valuable cap space but actually only cost receiving team $1.8M cash …. they’d be basically buying picksprospects the Leafs give up…. what is the $ value on picks/prospects? There may be a team willing to pay $’s for picks or prospects

Are the Rangers , who are currently in re-build mode; going to spend near the Cap next year? I’m asking ; that wasn’t a rhetorical statement

Rangers are cash rich … if they are not going to be any-where near Cap ceiling next year ….. what prospect/pick package are they willing to pay $1.8M cash for

I’m certainly not saying they would or that the interested party would be NYR…. just saying that moving Horton is not completely out of the question …. almost completely ; just not yet 100 % out of the question

Put another way …. Leafs moving Horton with retained salary ; has a higher probability than Sully sitting JJ for the entire play-offs

      • Ny could take on that contract, but doubtful they will. With Staal, Smith , Beleskey, Shattenkirk, Lundqvist not going anywhere anytime soon. They’ll be well over the floor even minus Hayes , Zuccarello and Mcquaid (assuming they’re all traded.

With one more full year remaining on Hortons contract, it would take one hell of a prospect to take on that cash even at 50%. Probably a nhl ready young player. 1.8 million cash is a little rich for a 1st round pick that will fall in the bottom 10 or so. I can’t see any team paying that premium.

James Dolan probably spent 1.8 million on meals this weekend… but I can’t imagine him taking on that hit without something very promising coming back his way.

      • NY4Life

        Yep …. longshot

But it’s like that drinking game in University …..

“Would you …. for a dollar….. no…. for $100 M …. yes ….. so there is a point somewhere in between that works …. LOL

Every trade has to have something coming from both sides …. lowest let’s say is NYR giving up a 7th rounder to take on Horton at full hit ….. NO

On the other end of the spectrum …. if Leafs offered to retain 50 % on Horton + Kappy + 1st …. I’m positive NYR would gladly offer up a 7th for that deal

….. so …. there is a plausible deal somewhere between the extremes that could see Horton moved

There may be other teams out there . I was only using Rangers as they are cash rich, rebuilding ; and likely not to be spending up to the Cap next year

I’m still wondering if Brisboise is going to call Gorton at Season’s end to see if he’ll take on Callahan and if so; at what cost?

Callahan one yr left at $4.7M cash ; $5.8 M Cap

        50% take-back …. Callahan then at $2.35M to play 3rd line winger would be a bit over-pay ….. what’s that worth in picks/prospects?

        Katchouk + Callahan at 50 % retained for a 7th rounder?

The other side of decision …. from TBay’s persoective …. buy him out after season ends …. they save $3.1M in Cap hit for 19/20 but get hit with an extra $1.6M in 20/21…. actual cash outlay is $1.6M in each of 19/20 and 20/21

        Just food for thought

      • The Penguins have a better roster top to bottom right now than the one that won the cup in 2017 but they realistically don’t have a chance to win this year? Yes they have underachieved this season but as long as they make the playoffs they will be tough for any team to beat, especially those perpetual chokers in Tampa.

    • Pengy as far as a promise by Dubas to WN; all Kyle would have to say “It was contingent on William living up to his side of the deal” which obviously would be producing points and he isn’t doing that at this point.

      • 👍

  7. Although I like to see Mark Stone in Boston a return home to play for Winnipeg would be a strong move by the Jets who are reported to be willing to give up their 1st round pick and throw in highly skilled undersized and underused Nic Petan you have the start of a good package.

    • Caper

Stone will be a great add to any team

I think Ottw should aggressively try to get this extension done …. I think he’s a good fit to wear the C in Ottw

George …. whereforarthou on these issues

      Hope you are OK George

Methinks if he’s not going to sign in Ottw …. then Winn would aggressively pursue him and try to make a move for Brassard

Those moves will cost a first and second and Petan and more ….. leaving Winn’s first pick in June in round 4 (3rd rounder already traded)

…. so tough to see Winn getting both Stone and Brass

Stone in Bruins …. big spike in 2nd line production

      1st rounder a given

If the consensus is something on the lines of 1st, Petan , and a prospect …… what is the ask from Bos?

…… George …. hope you are OK

      • Pengy..tough 3-2 loss at Toronto no Malkin how did bjugstad and mccann look? If we could so.ehow add ferland and a bottom pairing d ti play with a Benn bortuzzo mcquaid someone like that..

      • Hi BlackNGold

Pens did fine. Close game in shots and chances …. could have gone either way …. Murray had absolutely no chance on one (seeing eye point shot through 4 or 5 pairs of legs) and basically no chance on Mathew’s goal (already down and screened) and Mathew’s on doorstep for gaping/empty net goal. Hyman had a great dig and quick hands for his nice goal.

Sid great one-timer roofer from tight angle on PP was nice. Blueger had another grit goal

Without Gino ; Leafs focused shutting down the Sid line

With things that tight …. I’d have to say Gino (healthy) in that game ; would have given Leafs 3 lines to contend with and in that case …. at the very least it goes to OT. I’d think likely a Pens win

I’m a dual Pens/Leafs fan …. so I just sat back and enjoyed the game

ideal for me … as pre-game both in 2nd for their Div and 1 point apart …. would have been a Pens OT win …. leaving both tied in points post game

I’m guessing Gino out one more game

  8. I guess Mathews should be less than Mcdavid who is a threat every single shift . Mathews not so much every single game so should be not as much salary. Not even sure more than Tavares. He should take something off on shorter term and not be paid for the market where he plays or hype around him. If they want to keep this team together and win championships he needs to do the right thing. If not take his dough and start golfing in Arizona every April because they won’t make May.

  9. Caper

I think you are a Winnipeg guy, what are your thoughts on Laine and Conner?
They are both coming out of their entry level deals. Who do you see as the better player?

The few times I have watched Winnipeg Conner is the better player. Laine almost seems like a liability when he is not scoring.

Also will Winnipeg keep Trouba after this season.

A lot of people don’t talk much about the jets off season this year but they have some serious decisions to make contract wise.

  10. Dermott shoots….SCORES!!!

Horn blows. Aunt Sally’s hair on her arms standing up,

    Fans screaming. Children cheering.

    Leafs celebratory hug. Penguins dejected.

    And then…..

    the elevator song.

  11. For every good young up and coming team the cap has to be one of the most important issues that has to be managed.

Kypreos mentioned the Flames 1st round pick is in play. I really hope they keep the pick.
We are not in the same pickle that the Leafs, Jets, and Lightning find themselves in but with Tkachuk coming out of entry level deal I heard Brian Burke mention the starting price for him will be 7.5 million. If that is the case someone off the roster will have to go. I suspect it will be Frolik.

So trading a first round pick this year would be a high price to pay for a rental. Plus it might upset the chemistry in the room.
Unfortunately the Flames do not have a second round pick. If they did it would come in handy to trade for a goalie.
I have no confidence in Smith

  12. is Hayes a fit in NSH with Watson out?

GM Poile gave a 1st for Gaustad. Can NYR get a 1st and top prospect? or send ADA with Hayes for an additional pick?

  13. Flames don’t need to do much. Zuccarello would be a nice add that might even stay. If that is the case I would try to move Neil or and Frolik . Can’t see any help in net out there Rittich and Smith could get it done. Keep this year’s first and move 2020 second or first if you had to

    • If I had a choice between Frolik and Zuccarello, I’d keep Zuccarello and re-sign him. He’s 30 and not fitting in NYs rebuild. Ditto Neil.

    • It might be hard to move Neil right now, but I actually like him. He is getting a lot of chances so I think it will start clicking for him soon.
Plus I think Neil will be invaluable in the playoffs.
If he doesn’t score much in the regular season buts lights it up in the playoffs it will be considered another shrewd move by Treliving

  14. Neal will break out at some point .Did not mean swap him or Frolik but somewhere else and for Zuccarello picks and prospects

  15. Penguins dont need zuccarello not having a good year salary cap to high..
Pens need a veteran dman to play 3rd pairing with a jordie benn robert bortuzzp adam mcquaid type…and add ferland somehow we are set

  16. Zuccarello would be the 6th leading scorer today in Pittsburgh, and 5th as far as forwards go. He’s out producing “on fire rust” and 5.3 million Hornqvist! So let’s call a spade a spade here. Ny doesn’t need Jarry…. what else does Pittsburgh have worth while?

    • Nyr4life..zuccarello is slow and doesnt fit Pittsburgh… he isnt as good as hornqvist period. Rust 14 goals zuccarello 16 goals..he would be a 3rd liner in can keep him…oh yeah still havent said you best OVERALL player in the league yet still waiting mine is Crosby..dont give me the most geg or power play goals oveerall

      • Lmao! Again, he’s not. 3 gwgs last time I checked . And if you think Zuccarello is slow… we’re just done here!

Maybe watch a game not involving Pittsburgh once in a while!

        Black and yellow!

      • Hornqvist the speedster… lmmfao and only 5 more years at the low low cost of 5.3 per.

Can’t wait to see Pittsburgh in 3 years from now! Letang , Malkin(walking bandaids) Murray( yet another walking bandaid) Crosby( one concussion away from a window licker) Hornqvist, etc! All 30+ , minus Murray who will be retired / Ltir candidate well before 30…..

  17. Man if Stone becomes a Jet my fandom may add Winnipeg as a 1a 1b type goalie thing in respect to the teams I cheer for. Especially with little to look forward to in Ottawa over the remainder of this year and summer. Winnipeg going on a long playoff run with Stone this summer may have me cheering as loudly for them when they score as I would of the Sens.

I’ll always be a Sens fan right up till the day Melnyck truly digs them into the ground but it’s weird to acknowledge this to myself. Shows how badly this Ottawa team has started to alienate its fan base, leaving it with no confidence a competitive team can even be built. When Tkachuk and Chabot reach their prime and if they become stars we are all expecting them traded rather than being paid.

  18. Nyr4life..we are all day to are a big should of could of guy..mostly delusional. Rangers are on three times this week.. funny zuccarellos so good why they thi king of moving him..mmhh penguins arent moving hornqvist or rust.. i actually like the rangers just not guys who cant back shir up whos your best overall player…cmon ny man up have an opinion..

  19. zuccarello is so good why the rangers trying to deal him huh? Penguins arent dealung hornqvist or rust…..
You say you cant wait to see the penguins in three years….cant wait to see the rangers in 3 years..oh yeah they will be doing the same thing losing..being on the outside and looking in..oh yeah if you ever grow a set you best best Overall seems to have your tongue mi e is Crosby who is yours let me guess zuccarello..

    • Crosby isn’t even the 10th best player in the league at the moment you homer! Lmao!

Lets all live in yesterday !

      • Live in yesterday like the rangers..

      • “Your a complete idiot “…. you’re…. a complete idiot! Lmfao. When you attempt to insult, try and not look like 3rd grade was a failure!…. you’re = you are….. it really isn’t anything more THAN 3rd grade grammar!

      • Even if as you say he isnt the best overall although you cant name anyone better he is no worse than 3rd and if you think he isnt your completely ignorant ans assinian.

    • Remember when Pittsburgh sold off Jagr, Kovelev , etc for a bag of pucks to tank out and get Crosby? Of course you don’t! You became a bandwagon fan 11 minutes after they won a cup! Lmfao!

      • Apparently you don’t remember the Crosby draft either …Pitt didn’t sell off all of those players as there was a strike the year before and they gave all teams an equal shot at him …nothing was weighted as Edm and Cal should have had top 10 picks and went 24 and 25

    • Rebuilding since 94? Lol. I guess they’re the most successful rebuilding team ever. Since the cap…. 3 ecf’s, 1 scf…. more playoff games and series won than almost every team in the nhl in the cap era…. but I guess you’d have to be an actual fan rather than a bandwagon guy that tuned in 3 years ago to any nhl games!?

  20. And in other news the Sabres won’t do anything at all, better lucky next year I guess, if Skinner doesn’t re-sign they could be worst team again. I just pray to the Hockey Gods they don’t pick up any old forwards with dead weight contracts, Berglund was bad enough and they were lucky he quit.

    • Well done matt..nyr4life is delusinal ..buffalo terrific up and coming team very talented.. think they will resign skinner?

    • Matt…thank you rescued from nyr4??? Buffalo a young and upcing you think they resign skinner? Bla k n gold

  21. Can’t say I’m surprised to read the last few post. People should seriously not be allowed to hide behind Aliases. I remember 3 or 4 years ago when I first came upon this site and brought that up. It didn’t go well then. It won’t now so dont’ bother attacking. I just believe people tend to watch what they say more when there name is attached.

But heck I don’t come here for the enlightened conversations. There was a time I did. But how silly was I. How naïve.

    • Yeah, that got right outta hand in a hurry.
We all should try to be a little more civil.
@Pengy, this is why we never hear from George and others for long stretches.

      • Agreed, and that’s why I’ve deleted most of their posts. It’s one thing to have a healthy debate, but this was beyond the pale.

  22. Of others…

  23. Of others

  24. Love watching how all of these teams in cap hell are hearing it from fans about trade this slow guy or that aging one at Xx mil per with a NTC. You were the ones screaming to sign them and get them. Now dump them bums eh? How about stop rewarding guys for one or two good seasons with near max deals before this becomes the NBA?
One guy doesn’t buy you the cup, see Edm among others for proof. It takes a team, how do the Hawks look now after putting all that money in their top four or five guys? Not gonna be good for a while. Better learn to be ok with that if you want to hand out 10mil plus per player
